The rut during hot weather
« on: September 20, 2012, 07:14:11 AM »
So I tried a search and didn't come up with much on here so I will ask the question.  How will all this hot weather effect the rut or the Elk?  I start my Bull hunt on 1 October and it looks as though there will be no significant change in this weather pattern.  I have hear that it is not so much the weather has it is the light.  Thoughts would be really appreciated.

They will be tearing it UP!    Its dependent of course on your locale that you are choosing to hunt.  That is PEAK time for any of the Yakima herd, and pretty much most herds in this state I believe.   You will have more early morning action than early evening, but at that time they will be rutting no matter the weather.   If you have clear skies and a full moon, or good moon, then expect LOTS of nocturnal action.  Be quick to move in the mornings.  NO SLEEPING IN

I sure hope they'll be tearing it up.  I'm heading over to Rimrock this weekend for my third and final scouting trip prior to our muzzy hunt on Oct 1st.  Labs07, what unit did you draw?

I was north of your location last year and spent 3 trips prior to the muzzy opener and they were screaming up a storm.  Harvested my bull on the 2nd day of the muzzy opener and they were screaming, stomping and tearing up trees ready for some fighting, so yeah, it's going to be a good time of the month.  get one and post some pics and a story.

I killed my bull on oct1 last year opening day of muzzy and the bulls were going nuts! I know of 7 bulls killed during the muzzy season in my area alone last year.

Your biggest worry will be if they shut down the season or not.  PRAY for rain.

It was hot as Hell for my archery tag. But nonetheless we had seven bulls bugling at us at one time. With the herd bull on top of the hill chasing all his cows around like crazy.  And that was just the beginning of "pre rut" goodluck kill big one.

My pops drew goose prairie muzzy, hopin he gets a good one and the fire in the bumping doesnt get too bad! One of the better years for that permit, whole week of the woods to him self before the spike hunters show up.
