Suicide in the Pasayten
« on: September 22, 2012, 06:42:15 AM »
Pasayten Suicide?
Remains found
Two hunters discovered what they believed to be human remains in the Pasayten Wilderness on Tuesday, according to Okanogan County Sheriff Frank Rogers.
“From what we were able to determine at the scene we believe the remains are that of Melissa M. Kerrigan, 27, who had been reported missing from Island County back in September of 2011,” said Sheriff Rogers. She was 27 years old.
The hunters hiked out and contacted the Okanogan County Sheriff’s Office. The next day Okanogan County Deputies Ottis Buzzard and Michael Blake hiked back into the area with the two hunters, who showed the deputies where they discovered the remains.
Kerrigan’s vehicle had been found at the Billygoat Trailhead north of Winthrop on September 29, 2011. Kerrigan had also left a suicide note which her family had found, stating she was going to the wilderness to end her life. People searched for Kerrigan in October of 2011 but nothing was found then.
The human remains were discovered approximately 6 ½ miles into the wilderness from the Billygoat Trailhead.
“It was very nasty terrain with a lot of down fall,” said Sheriff Rogers on Wednesday. “The remains and belongings were brought out last night.”
Island County Sheriff’s Office was notified and they were to speak with Kerrigan’s family last night (Wednesday) to advise them of what was found.
The remains will be sent off for DNA testing, Sheriff Rogers said.

Very sad. Unfortunately our public lands see a lot of suicides, people go to places they love to end their lives. There are a couple NPS units back east which see several suicides a month in the summer months...

A friend of mines' Dad did the same thing back in the mid-1980's when he was sick. Never found him or, any evidence of him.

A cousin of mine did the same thing in the Manastash back in 1991, took us a week to find him. Found out later he was involved in a fatality car wreck. :bash:

You can hear them say it on the way down.....

ok bad joke, but its a pretty sad deal when some one chooses to end their life. Lucky I've never had any close do that, but I know itd be pretty tough to cope with. That kid that died up north some where recently, news said he fell off a cliff to his death, was actually a suicide as well.

I have always said that if I was stricken with a terminal disease,  when it comes time I would end it. I will not put my family through the pain..

I've had to respond to a number of these suicides in the woods and it's never fun.  I figure alot of people think they'd rather head off to the hills to do it rather than do it at home where the family will find them and have to deal with all of the aftermath of that.

Over the last 15 years I have dealt with a lot of deaths, both suicide and others.  Not sure how you "ending' your own life would be better for you family.  The emotional and psychological effects of suicide on the family is usually much greater then when someone dies from a terminal disease .  Just my experience.
