New Bow #2...

ok so did a little horse trading today, got a Buckmaster BTR and its pristine, finally the correct draw length, its 70 lbs (ugh) and of course a fiber optic sight. so, i want to make sure its set up right etc.. so how do i know if the strings are not good and need to be replaced?

Is the bow used? If so how many shots on the string?

The easiest way is to just look it over real good and check to see if there is any fraying on the strings. But the best thing to do would be to take it to a bow shop and have them check it. They mat even be able to pack the draw weight out a bit if you don't want it that high.

I am guessing this is a used bow, since you are asking about the string right?


Did you buy some string wax for your bow? Check the serving to make sure there isn't major separation or that it is coming undone. Make sure you don't have any broken strands and liberally rub some string wax on your string and cables, work it in real good. Don't put any wax on your servings. You should wax your string regularly. I usually wax my bow string once a week when I am shooting a lot. I believe it is recommended that you get a new string after 5000 shots or once a year. Personally if I bought a used bow and didn't know when the last time the string was replaced, I would buy a new string for it.

how do i know what length arrows?
do practice tips shoot the same as broad heads, and or go as far?

The length of your arrows is going to depend on your draw weight and draw length. The pro shop should have a chart that should determine the correct spined arrow for your setup. I normally have my arrows cut to the end of my riser or an inch past. I don't like have a broad head behind my hand. The BTR has  an almost "corner' on the cam, and that spot always seems to wear the string faster than anything else on that bow.. look it over, you will probably see what I mean.. but it aint all bad, killed my first elk with a BTR..

I think it cost me $30 to have mine restringed a few years ago. I would definitely take it into the bow shop

It really depends but somewhere around $100 probably. And you will have to sight the bow in yourself. Its not like a gun.

30 or 100, wow thats a huge difference. sighting a bow myself may not be good if i barely learning to shoot straight, how do i know if its me of the bow off  is there anyone at all that does all the above?

The string itself probably is 30-40 dollars but you will need your cables replaced so altogether you are looking at around 100 dollars. Take Larry(old dog) up on his offer, he is very knowledgeable and can answer your questions to get you started in the right direction.
