Abreviated write up since I can't type.  This is explained later.

Well, had my second deer tag for Central Okanogan.  Got to Buckmarks house Friday afternoon and off we went.  Drove through the smoke that blew north.  Buckmark almost hooked us up with a side of beef each as a range cow walked out into the highway in front of his F250 going 75mph.  He managed to stop less than a foot from hitting it.

We got to Tonasket about 5pm and went to meet the landowners who gave me access.  Very nice people.  Very appreciative of the crabs and clams I brought them and pointed us to where the deer were.  Had 5 within range on the second landowners property but we hadn't met them yet and were unsure of property lines so we passed.  We attempted a drive.  Buckmark walked about a mile around the hill I settled in at the bottom of and kicked a few deer but none my way.  Got dark so off to camp.  Almost got a freebee when a mulie doe walked out in front of his truck, only going 55mph this time though since we were just coming off of a hairpin turn.  I swear Buckmark drove NASCAR in a past life :chuckle:  Dinty Moore beef stew, a beer, and part of the movie Silverado and it was off to bed.

I got woken up at 5:15 to a pounding on my camper door since I screwed up setting my alarm.  Coffee, cereal, and we were off.  Actually made it all the way to the hunting spot without trying to hit an animal with the truck.  Drove around the back side of the property and kicked me out of the truck so I started walking the brush towards the alfalfa field.  Buckmark circled back around and found the deer herd of about 15 deer and came around the hill and signaled me and we were off after them.

Caught up to them and they were in rifle range, but not bow.  Went a little further to cut them off but they didn't go the way we hoped.  Came back down and ran into half of the herd that had broken off as they were crossing the road.  Buckmark kicked me out of the truck to take a shot as they were moving away.  Then he spotted 2 does right at my feet, about 20 yards.  I only saw one so I leveled the 20 yard pin and let fly on a hard quarter away shot.  Arrow entered a little further back than wanted, about 3" back of the rib cage and exited 1" behind the opposite leg pit.  Solid liver shot.  watched about 20 minutes as she expired and went to get her.  Got her back to the truck and we were off to gut and process back at camp.

Thats where the day went to *censored*.  While cutting the last quarter off, the leg pulled my knife hand down and the knife stabbed my off hand.  Nice deep cut.  We got it bandaged with a bandaid and duct tape.  Then we met some nice folks who said our attempt at first aid was sub par and got hooked up with an iodine wipe and butterfly stitches.

Drive home was uneventful as there were no animals with a death wish.  I'm home now and my wife the ex-nurse fixed me up right with an alcohol scrub and antibiotic spray (I screamed out that I hated her.  Scared one of the kids because he thought I meant it) new butterfly stitches and a finger brace so it wouldn't move.  Off to Group Health in the morning since it was too late tonight.

Deer in the fridge, off to bed soon.

Big thank you to a few people:

Buckmark, the best host ever.
RadSav, you know your part in all of this
Warhorse for pointing me in the right landowner direction and looking for deer around the area
H20hunter for the crabbing accessories to help me catch my private property bribes
Anyone else who had a hand in this that
I'm forgetting in my tiredness

Oh, I forgot, no pics of the deer.  Pics aren't really my thing.  I did get pics of the knife attack though:

And after the first set of butterflies.  Thought it was all better until I hit it when packing up my truck

Good job on the butterflies, I don't think they will stitch it after waiting that long but good luck.

Don't think so either.  Had I gone to the ER tonight, after 12+ hrs, they wouldn't have stitched it either and I'd be out $150 co-pay.  Going to GH to have them give it a once over, get better equipment than a popcicle stick and tape, and some antibiotics.

Close but, didn't eve nick it.  Full range of motion and no pain.  Close to that vein to the left of the cut too.  That would have been REALLY bad

Glad to hear that you were able to get out hunting. I remember from your previous posts that this year looked like a wash, especially with what was going on with your wife's health.

Enjoy the deer meat and get well soon!

I notice that you're in Shelton. I'm in Silverdale.  Maybe sometime we could meet up and trade stories. I'll be out hunting the 2nd week of October for Mod Season. Maybe after that.

Cool wound and story.  Reminds me of one my better moments ground skinning a buck on the Tatoosh.  At the very second I am holding a piece of hide and starting to cut back towards myself, I think, "this is not very safe," and slice cleanly and quickly through the hide and stick my knife about 3/4 inch or more in my lower leg.  It actually stuck out of me when I let go of it.  Not really serious, a fair amount of blood, quickly staunched by bandages, etc, but what a *censored* I was.

Dang J, you have to be more careful. You have had a few close calls that could have been bad. You are lucky that didn't catch that tendon. My brother cut the one in his pinkey finger and that was a big $ fix and a lot of pain.

Different knife.  It was my butchering knife I keep in my pack.  Definitely sharp enough to cut my finger off.  This was just a glancing cut

Thought I was being careful this time.  I can't blame this one on the stupidity of the human holding the equipment like the broadhead.  This was just a slip.

Funny thing was i had talked about the hospitals in either tonasket or republic, how basically you did not want to get sick and have to go to either, after he cut himself the first thing i said was i think we should get it clean and i have superglue if you want to glue it shut, he passed and we bandaided and pulled it closed with duct tape, stopped bleeding but was at least the best we could do (adding more to my first aid kit after this), then we got some better supplies as noted from some nice people i knew and stopped to talk to..

I will be sure to bring the whole pharmacy when we head out for yotes this winter.  I never leave home with out staples so we should be good.  But, even then maybe I should do the skinning :chuckle:

Sounds like you got better penetration from your arrow this time.  Must have hit something really hard on the first one.  Liver, diaphram and one lung not a bad shot at all.  Were those fresh blades?  46#/27" and two deer with two shots.  Sounds like you are getting it done  Very nice!

Need to start taking some pictures of dead critters though.  You know the H-W rules...no pictures - it didn't happen.  You do have a voucher so you get a pass. I guess   But two H-W members and no pictures :dunno:  Sounds a little fishy to me :tung:

Lol.  We were up on a mountian with no cell service too :chuckle:  fresh blades.  Only bone it hit was one blade cut about 1/8" into a rib on the exit side.

56lbs cleaned and aging.  Thanks to my dad who came out and peeled the meat off for me.  I thought I was doing good at about 1.5hrs to strip the meat off.  He was a machine.  Made better cuts than I ever have and had the whole thing done in about 40 minutes.

About the best entrance angle I could remember.  I put the blade in the rib where the blade cut it and it naturally went in this direction so I can tell the direction was right.  Angle is a best guess

Here's a shot that shows how low it exited.

I am pretty sure that at whatever angle it went through it killed the deer, yep i will even go out on a limb and say that deer died.... :chuckle:
For anyone that thinks that 50lbs or less wont pass through, think again, it did, i was surpised a bit i even thought i saw the arrow sticking out after the shot then realized it was blood i saw, i even found his arrow were she was standing...
To hunt and butcher an animal is to recognize that meat is not some abstract form of protein that springs into existence tightly wrapped in cellophane and styrofoam.

No reason to struggle with 65lbs when 49 lbs will do just fine

Are the nightmares going away yet?  Last time I road in a Las Vegas cab it took a week before I stopped waking up thinking I was going to be in a crash.  My mind just could not shake it.  Pulling dead bodies, including friends, out of the ocean without a single lost minute of sleep.  Two trips in a Vegas cab and  :yike:
He asked, Do you ever give a short simple answer?  I replied, "Nope."

Now I know why it takes so long to get any material or get a JML processed through supply... you're on here all day! Hahah.

Jk.  Nice work on the doe.  Hope the hand heals quick.
