Any luck in the rain?
« on: August 25, 2008, 11:26:44 AM »
I tried a couple areas this weekend.  Saturday was much hotter than I expected, and I ended up scouting more than hunting...gettting ready for Sunday.  Then Sunday rained like heck...the camper has a couple new leaks!  I didn't even try hunting in it.

Did anyone else get out and have more luck than me?

How do y'all cope with rainy hunting days?

Kurt

It didn't rain on us until we went north. We didn't get a bear. Some other guys who were up in the same area as us got one. Saw another one which was hit by a car.

I don't like hunting in the rain much. I just took a chance that we would be south enough to miss the rain on Sunday. It was a lucky chance since I believe the weathermen around here don't know much about predicting weather sometimes.

I was out hiking in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness area this weekend and saw a nice bear and goat. Problem was he was about 10 miles back so I took some pics and watched him feed. Luckily we made it back to the vehicle just as the rain started.

Most of the bear I've come across have been on dryer days...never seen one in a downpour. Not scientific, or helpful...just my experience.

Blacktails, on the other hand, seem to come out in full force when it's dumping buckets.
I left it better than I found it...did you?
I hunt animals because veggies are too easy to stalk.

A steady drizzle aint too bad if you have a warm dry camper or cabin to come back to.  It's just when its pissing sideways and the salmon are crossing over the road (I've seen it!) that I think hunting better left for another day.

I've decided to do away with gore-tex and go with old fashioned rubber slickers when it's raining hard and it does seem to keep me a little bit drier.

And hey...sometimes its tough hunting when its too dry and hot too.  I make too much noise and sweat too much.

Sounds like a typical coastal elk season. :chuckle:

Yep. Seems like they come out and sun themselves on a log deck while overlooking a feeding area.

A few years ago we shot one in the middle of a thunder storm and it was pouring down.  We caught him walking on a skidder road.
