My brother and I were archery hunting brown bears in Alaska and had a 9 footer across the creek from us (~25 yards) but we couldn't get a shot.  He turned and MELTED into the brush without much of a sound.  It was amazing that such a large animal could just disappear into nothing, I mean he walked maybe 6-7 steps and just vanished.   :yike: :yike: We made it back to the ATV's in record time after that

UPDATE:

went back after my last post we hauled butt back, I couldn't take it!

we creep in, me and the boy this time, 5 steps and glass, 5 steps and glass, 5 steps and glass.... to the right 2 NICE black-tail  but I'm packing my 300 wm so its a no go  :bash:, We scout some and head back to the trail head as its been an hour and its 10 minutes from PITCH BLACKNESS and even worse, we KNOW any minute they will be coming out to eat.

We glass a second and sure enough, there's yogi... NO, its yogis grand pappy and hes ONE BIG SUMBICH!!  :yike: :yike: :yike: :yike: FOR THE LOVE OF CHRIST THE ONES HUGE BEAR   :yike: :yike:

I sat glassing his waddling butt, my son is having a bad case of the shakes now, and within 5 minutes i can barely see him at 200 yards as its almost pitch dark, *censored* WRONG TIME!!  He is in and out of 5' tall blackberries, and any minute we wont be able to see our shoes, *censored* *censored* *censored* !!!!  :bash: :bash: &*^$^@#*&%&$&*^%(%(*&^*(^   :bash: :bash: :bash:

"son we gotta go, NOW, or were gonna be part of the food chain"...

Pappy is 400+. My hunting buddy is 6'7 / 390 lbs, and on his hands and knees he is way smaller then this bear. So knowing we would be in pitch black, and have to wait for him to kick the bucket, and THENNNNNNNNN find him, and worse pack him out, we opted to AGAIN not take the shot and wait til 5am and look for Pappy. I'm sick, hes was damn huge, and I'm going to go have a stiff drink, right now, and cry, cry some more then maybe ill be ok.

Man I hope we see him at 5am :mgun: :mgun: :mgun: :mgun:

You walked in that far, with not much time till sunset, and you didn't bring a headlamp or flashlight?   :o   :bdid:

Yes, I read that, but STILL! I keep a mini mag flashlight and a headlamp in my pack at all times, even when I don't expect to be out till dark.

I hate having to walk out in the dark with no light. Once I had to go a little over a mile, with only the display light on my GPS to light the way. It was even worse because I had my daughter with me, who was 4 years old at the time.

cannon thanks, my whole goal with every step is to teach my son to do it right not be careless, or take chances, or wound animals for loss, im doing more teaching then hunting

bobcat- sorry brother but that was very careless with a 4 yr old..tisk tisk... to each his own but it was a bad idea, always plan ahead, otherwise be prepared, this was meant to be a short and fun scout/hunt AND I KEPT IT THAT WAY.. I followed the plan, and we were out and gone at dark. Yes i could of dropped that bear, but I followed my plan, another day no big deal.

Careless? Maybe, I did have a flashlight, but the batteries died. No big deal. Was familiar with the area, been in and out of there many times. Just was harder packing the 4 year old and not being able to see where I was stepping.

If I had been hunting and not just checking a trail camera, I surely would have been more prepared and had extra batteries in the pack.

Dude chill out I was just razzing you . of course if you had a bad shot dont take it . If you had a solid shot right at dark I don't see any issue with taking it . hike back out seemed pretty close get a buddy and some lights then go recover the animal . more often than not when you pass up a chance on a throphy class animal you don't get another chance to take him.
