Bought my 'first' bow! Ben Pearson Spoiler
« on: September 30, 2012, 08:34:11 AM »
After some deliberation and too many hours carrying a 10lb weapon around in the field, I've decided to get into Bow Hunting. Don't worry, by 'get into' I mean I just bought a bow and will be rushing out into the field to drop a Deer or Bear...just kidding. I'm buying the Bow now so that I can practice all winter, spring, and early summer long and inevitably use the Bow to take game if I've developed the accuracy and consistency to do so. Because I'm just getting into it I didn't want to break the bank on a really spendy bow, beside that I'm a boat builder by trade and would like to get into bow making if this suits me. I bought a Ben Pearson Spoiler (45#-28"). I grew up shooting a Ben Pearson recurve (was far too big for me) so I feel the learning curve may be a bit shorter. I'm struggling with arrow selection (as i see many people do) and wanted to ask for a little advice from you folks on HW.

First of all my draw length is 27.5" A friend of mine gave me some Easton ST Epic 400's that are 28' from shaft end to nock. I'm not sure if this will work given the fact that I've read the arrow length should be 3/4 inches longer than your draw length. I'm also not sure about the spine being a 400...this is all new to me. When I was a kid my Dad just grabbed arrows off the shelf and handed them to me. I never had consistent grouping for every reason you can imagine. My best guess is I just need to get close and practice until my fingers bleed to further fine tune my setup. Any input would be great, just bear in mind that I have VERY LITTLE EXPERIENCE with all of the technical bow jargon. I'm sure an Archery shop is a great place to start but I'm afraid to run into a salesman rather than an archer, and get the wrong advice. Thanks folks!

I wanted to mention the person I bought this bow from. I bought a Bow and glove from him and he's tossed in SO many other things. Great communicator and will get my future business. Here's a link to his eBay store.

Check him out if you need anything!

I have shot a pearson spoiler for years and back in the day I loved it ..I also shot fingers for most of my bowhunting career and the spoiler was a tuff one to do that with but when I started shooting 3 fingers below the knock that all ended ... practice and more practice  and I still own it today ...It is now my bowfishing bow ! one other thing I better mention is that I have replaced the limbs 3 times on that bow  :yike:
