Leupold scope choices
« on: August 25, 2008, 09:14:11 PM »
I am very close to buying a new scope. I have a VXIII 4.5-14LRx50mm with a 3/4 mildot and I love it. I will be purchasing another Leupold for sure.

After doing a bit of research, I have all but decided on a VXIII 4.5-14x40mm with a B&C reticle for my new hunting rifle. Then today I went to look and one and they had a VXII 3-9x50mm with a duplex and it seemed quite nice, especially because it was over $200 cheaper!

I would just like to hear any input you guys might have on the subject.

The new VX-II's are a great scope for the money. Optically they are equivalent to the old VariX-III scopes. I would just stick with the VX-II unless you have money to burn.

BTW, welcome to the board!

i would do the same, and send it to Leupold with 50 bucks and have them change it to the reticle of your liking..and i believe for about 150 bucks more you could get bullet matched turrets, so for the cost of a VX-III you could et a VX-II with a BC reticle, and ballistic matched turrets for any range of shooting you do.....

agree, go VXII, ya can get the one with the LRD reticle. that B&C reticle is a little busy. ya got a cabelas catalog laying around? ya can probably get 25 bucks off. have you considered a 40mm scope. can't go wrong with leupold.

I ended up going with a VXIII 4.5-14x50 with a duplex. I have one of these on my other rifle (w/ side parallax and 3/4 mil-dot), and its amazing. I stuck with what I know.

That's a great choice. If money wasn't an issue I'd pick the VX-III over the VX-II, no question about it. Only thing I would have done different is I would have gone with a 40mm objective.

bobcat, any particular reason?

My boss said he has a 50mm and wouldnt get one again b/c it is too bulky to carry around, wont fit in a scabbard and whatnot.

Just that they're heavier and the main reason is that they have to be mounted too high. I like my scopes mounted really low so I don't have to raise my face off the stock to see through the scope. Some rifles are ok with the 50mm objective though, just depends on the stock.
