Getting ready for the 16 hour drive to NE montana, Heading out early friday morning in the hopes of getting into a few birds. Dont really know too much about what to expect but i am really hoping we have a good time. I'll try to post a few pics  now and then if cell reception is good enough. Good Morning Skinzner
I spent a lot of time up there,  Call me tonight after dark with your map and I'll put you into some areas.  Last year was a very bad year for birds up in that area,  However my farmer friends there say they have bounced back quite well for this year.
I'm leaving early this Thursday but not quite that far or I'd say lets chase each other over there.  For what it's worth better birds this year in North Central MT.
That littlle Pudlepointer of yours will have a blast over there.

I'll give you a call tonight , thanks. Cedar spent a few months at Rocking M kennels doing retriever work and now has a love for the water, it sounds like theres a lot of ducks in the area over there so hopefully she will do as good as i think she will retrieving. I still havent shot a pheasant over her , but several others have. Hoping to get into some sharptails and huns over there also.

Skinzer,
Are you meeting up with a guy named Todd and several other Pudelpointer guy's? If so, its a small world.  I was going to do that trip last year but all of my dogs came down with kennel cough even though they were vaccinated.
If not, PM and I will put you in contact with him. They know the area well and they are good guys. One of the guy's has a litter mate to my latest pup. Have fun over there!
I'll be behind you by a week but we are not going that far east. Give us a report when you get back.

Jim is headed up there tomorrow. You guys talking T. Emery? He's definately not East. Great Falls. I'm headed to LA for work next week, hopefully get back and punching out shortly thereafter- Not sure I'll be going that far. Have some other stuff planned around W. Yellowstone and back up with friends in Helena and maybe up to Great Falls-ish area.

Gonna be a tough run with a retriever on sharptail. Especially without any experience on upland birds.

Shannon i'm not meeting up with anybody just me and a few buddies headed up that way, but i talked to  a guy in indiana that i believe is friends with who you are talking about and he is possibly headed up that way with his pudelpointer. If he ends up going  we were going to meet up and possibly introduce me to those guys. I'll hopefully do a few updates when we are over there.

They always stay at the city RV park. Froid is pro-hunting big time. The night before the pheasant opener they have a big feed for everyone. Look that group up. They are a good group of guys and have been going there for years. I'm sure they'd help out another pudelpointer owner willingly with some areas.

We are staying at the park in a big wall tent so maybe we will run into them. We wont make the steak feed friday night, i'm guessing we wont roll into town until really late friday. Thats one of the reasons we chose that area is because it seemed so friendly to hunters and lots of block management land. cedar is out of:

cedarwoods sharpshooter (eli)
Chechmates boise brown (sky)

Richard- are you staying out in MT for a while again this year? I have business to take care of next week but, I'm thinking on heading out 10-13.

Well we are definetly getting on birds, we are all having fun and we really want to see what a good year is like if this is below average.the biggest challenge has been figuring out all this bma stuff. This is going to make pheasant hunting washington hard , its kinda like going trout fishing after you have fished rufus woods and the average trout is 4 pounds.

I assume your mostly hunting pheasants but how are the numbers of sharptails and huns? Did you run into the pudelpointer group yet?

I'm hearing bird numbers are phenomenal this year in MT. Talked to Bluemoon a couple days ago, said it's lights out. Same with reports coming back from Havre.

Wish i'd of seen this thread when it was started. Just moved over here beginning of August. I drive by Froid every day for work and there were a few bird hunters staying in Froid. Saw your tent how did you end up doing?

Nice pics. Just drove by Froid this morning and there are still 2 rigs camped in Froid. The one has been there for a couple weeks now. Passed a rig with WA plates just north of Froid with a kennel in the back. All I was thinking was if it was someone from this sight or not.....LOL

with the block management program its really easy find some great spots. it seems overwhelming at first but they damn near hold your hand for you.

I have looked at the maps and it was overwhelming. There was so much land and the terrain is so big. The time of year when I am able to go is late November. Has anyone ever hunted there that time of year?
