European Mount
« on: October 03, 2012, 05:19:06 PM »
Instead of carving all the meat and what nots off an animal head, boiling and bleaching for a European mount, has anyone tried to just bury the head in the ground to let the bugs and the worms eat it instead. I do that with all of my deer heads and it works great. I leave the horns sticking out and I cover the whole thing with a wheel barrow or anything that keeps critters from getting to it. You have to be willing to wait 4-6 months before its ready to be cleaned. You can't leave it in the ground too long or the bone structure in the nose area gets a little weak. This process may not work for people who want to show off their trophies right away, but it sure cuts down on time that would be better spent else where. I don't get too many trophies, so this works good for me.

Hi Southpole and welcome aboard :hello:

I talked to a guy who did this on a whitetail and he told me it took two years  :yike: Why not just rot it off in water?

I've never tried that. I have a buck boiler so I can just do it in a afternoon.

I'd much rather just use water and a fish tank heater. Takes 2 or 3 weeks. My bull from the 14th is almost done and will be clean as a whistle and ready to degrease

I live on the north wet side. That's probably why it worked so fast for me. My problem is that I don't want to look at it either... I'm just a girl :chuckle:
