This time of year....
« on: October 11, 2012, 12:45:11 AM »
RTS's Post and a few others I've read elsewhere just made me want to post this reminder:

With the rains coming it's fishing in the river time. If you take your dog, please remember that if your dog eats dead salmon it can be deadly poisonous. Salmon poisoning is very common and dogs get very, very sick. When you're around the rivers this time of year, keep a close eye on your dog and make sure they don't eat any dead fish-

If you've been to the river and all of a sudden your dog starts getting sick- go to the vet asap!
"Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checked by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat."
Theodore Roosevelt 1899

Good reminder!

And just to clarify it's raw unfrozen salmon that poses a risk to dogs.  Cooked salmon is fine and AFAIK raw but previously frozen salmon is safe (I wouldn't try it though, yuck).  My Brit loves cooked salmon leftovers but she's not getting any of that sushi stuff.

This is a very good reminder! I personally had one dog get VERY sick from this and have been very aware of it since then. A lot of people think their dogs have iron stomachs, but this does hurt them. Thanks!
I hunt, therefore I am.... I fish, therefore I lie.
