Moose Hunt 2012

After receiving notice of being drawn, started to gather maps and looking at Google Earth in preparation for the big day.  Dale and Tara Denney, Bearpaw Outfitters, invited me to stay at their place, in Colville, during the duration of my hunt which was a great help in getting ready and while on the hunt.
The big day final arrived and it was time to get after the OIL Moose hunt. The first day was spent hiking behind a closed gate, stopping for some calls with high aspirations but no results. Day two came and went with the same results.
Day three started with a climb up onto one of the ridges where I bumped a moose which vanished into the timber. Continuing with the climb found me on a logged area where I stopped to have a little food and drink. As I was removing my pack I saw a cow going across an opening followed by a shooter bull. I got my gun and focused on an opening the moose were headed for but never arrived. Upon checking the area, she had taken him through a small draw into the timber.
Day four started with venturing into a different area, and during the trip rounded a corner and saw a meadow which was covered with frost and thought to myself, what a great picture but the only thing missing was moose. After a closer look there was a cow and calf lying in the tall grass on one side of the meadow, and after panning across the meadow spotted a bull lying in the grass. With the position of the bull it was hard to determine his size, so with the lack of panic on his part I decided to put him on video. After a few minutes he rose and looked like a fairly good bull but only had one brow tine on each side, so I decided to pass. The rest of the day was uneventful.
Day five and the day for completion of a 16 year quest for a moose. The day started with a trip into a previous hunted area with no sightings. Made the decision to go into an area where I could glass some logged areas. While driving along the road, there was a side road which went to the left and standing in the middle of the road was a bull facing directly at me. I stopped and but my binos on him but couldn’t see how large he was as his head was in the wrong position. Got my video camera and started to film, when he turned his head and exposed the length of the tines, I quickly put the camera down and grabbed my rifle, being a handicapped hunted, I stuck the gun out the window used the rear view mirror as a rest and pulled the trigger. The bullet hit its target but the bull started to walk away, should say slowly walk away, so I got out of the truck and put another round into him which put him down but kicking, a third round ended the ordeal.  The bull is a nine by seven with two brow tines and measuring forty-two inches wide. The hunt was truly a once in a lifetime hunt.
A special thanks to Dale and Tara for their hospitality.
