New to the State

Hey every I've been checking out the forum for a few weeks now figured I'd just join. Seems like a good people are on here.  Well I'm from Ohio and have been wanting to hunt here but just haven't had the time this year nor haven't really meet anyone that hunts. I ended having to miss my archery antelope hunt on labor day weekend in Wyoming because of work. As most of you guys know in Ohio we mainly hunt white tails and turkeys. I'm hoping I can get out in the woods this year.  Just not really sure where to go.

welcome to the forum.  we got roosevelt elk, rockymountain elk, mule deer, whitetail deer, blacktail deer, bear, cougar, moose, sheep, goats, and other stuff.  no antelope season.

Hey Archery Man.  Welcome.  The state is divided essentially into halves.  Start by determining what the differences are in the type of hunting between the halves and then determine what style fits you best.

You might be able to hunt the late deer season. I don't hunt archery, so I can't help you out. There are lots of good folks here that would be willing to help you out. Pick up some regs and find out where you would like to hunt. Then do a search or post up what unit and you could find some help.

Thanks guys. I'm trying to hunt mostly bear, and elk. I've done so much deer hunting back home. The past two years we were allowed to take 1 buck and 11 does a total of 12 deers. I did fill all 12 tags both years. I also do a lot of doe management with my best friend on the property we hunt. We hunt just a little over 1000 acres of private land. He owns 500 of it. It would be nice to find a good hunting partner out here that knows the way around and can teach me about bear and elk. If anyone is wanting to meet up let me know.

I take it you were a treestand hunter back home? If so westside elk would be an easy transition for you as the thick brushy terrain is perfect for treestands and can be VERY effective. Plus you have the opportunity at a branch bull in most of the units.

Ohio is a state for tree stand hunting. I did do a lot of that. We aren't allowed to hunt turkeys from a stand so that was the only time I didn't hunt out of one. I do my fair share of coyote hunting with a rifle as well. Are most of the units pretty populated with hunters out here in western washington?

Welcome to the site ,like someone had said -there is lot of people on here that are willing to help .You would need to determine which half of the state you want to hunt for elk . Most guys use Google earth to check for potential hunting places ......and later scout on foot ,ATV ,bicycles etc.....check out links to the map sites like

I would say most units aren't packed with hunters but there are a few that are. Get on the wdfw website and check the harvest reports. Personally I tend to stay away from the units that are loaded with elk because they are typically loaded with people. I hunt a small pocket of animals and we might see 1 or 2 other people on a normal season. I have had 100% success killing bulls since I started hunting from a stand, but then again I work for it.

Welcome to the forum. A lot of good people in this group. In response to your question about it being crowded...I can say the "wet side" sure does seem pretty crowded most of the time. I haven't tried the east side yet.

Welcome to the West. It's awesome out here compared to back there and the woods are really big. Know how to use a map and compass. Get a good GPS. Don't go hunting anywhere alone without telling someone where you'll be. Always take some survival and first aid items with you. Get out in the woods as often as you possibly can.

There is a lot to take in and figure out for sure. I want to try and hunt everything i can with my bow out here. I'm a pretty fit and healthy guy so I'm ready to get out and see the terrain. Wish I had a hunting partner that is pretty knowledgeable with the surroundings and animals. Either way I'll just go out by myself and explore.
