Archery late elk
« on: September 28, 2012, 02:14:31 PM »
Hello everyone. I am new to the site and I think there are some great tips. I am new to archery and am working on tactics. Looking for tips.

While hinting in gmu 666 on ft lewis, I came across some elk while sitting in my tree stand. At about 1400-1600 (2pm-4pm), I heard lots of bugling every 10-15 minutes. Of course I got excited , even though its not late archery elk season yet. Just planning ahead and looking for any advice on planning. I have read a little bit of posts on here regarding tips and what not, but I figured I would post something to talk directly to this. Also, I do not have a hunting buddy for archery and I can get people on post since I am a Soldier  8). Im not going to say where, but they are on post. I will also be going late deer in the same area, unless I fill my deer tag this afternoon :) I found an apple orchard on post and a guy that has feeders set up just off post. Im hoping to intercept the deer going out there, but they are going out at night time and I haven't found where they go after that :bash: . The guy with the feeders told me that a guy shot a cow out in a field near that area last year, so I am confident that they aren't migratting too much.  Any advice for both and possible hunting party maybe, would be great!

Here is  the elk that I heard the day I was deer hunting. If this guy has food and water in this area, will he hang out here during the late season? Just trying to get some pointers and advice. From what I have been reading, calling using a cow and/or lost calf call might work, but spot and stalk sounds like the method I should use. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!
