Springfield .40 Subcompact failure to feed

So I bought a Springfield .40 Subcompact about a month ago and just got it out to the range today. I LOVED the action and was have a grand time getting to know what I hope is going to be a great pistol. When I switched to the extended magazine, I had a failure to feed. No problem probably my error. The slide didn't fully eject the round from the magazine and was caught about 90% open. I dropped the magazine, cleared the chamber and racked it back a couple of times (I had been shooting with the 9 round magazine without ANY problems and had put about 20 rounds down when this happened). I didn't reload the magazine, but instead left the round that didn't feed out. Punched the magazine back up, pulled the slide back and.... same thing. Failure to feed. Okay, maybe not me. This happened 3 times. I never did get a shot off using the extended magazine. At one point I even chambered a round using the 9 round magazine and then put the extended magazine in it. Same thing; failure to feed.

Prior to taking it out, I had cleaned it lightly and oiled it. When I got it home, I field stripped it and cleaned it again (much more thoroughly) and oiled it again (this time a much lighter coat). I put a total of 50 rounds down the pipe and the only problems I had were when I used the extended magazine and it had the failure to feeds.

Prior to going to the range, I had loaded the magazines with my FMJ's and Home Defense rounds and had worked the action using both magazines without a problem.

So after cleaning it today, I reload my short mag and my long mag (with the exact same bullets I had previously used) and guess what.. failure to feed using the extended magazine. Looks like Springfield is getting a call from tomorrow.

They will probably replace the mag.  If they don't, just throw it away.  Mags are a dime a dozen and the first time they fail, chuck 'em.

Actually I think they are $38 I would check to see if it needs modified just a tad. If that doesnt work send it in.

those are good pistols, but it definitely sounds like a bad mag, can happen to any pistol.

Sounds like the magazine is riding too high in the well, replace the magazine. Good choice of gun!

Springfield customer service was awesome! They are sending me a new mag to see if that is the problem. If the new mag works, I send the them old one. If it doesn't she said it will be warrantied and they will either replace or repair it.... MUCH happier, but had hoped to have the extended mag for Deer season opener. Oh well!

I'd start with the ammo .......if it's russian ammo with steel cases you shot ,then try other brand before taking it all apart and return .

Bend the "ears" of the mag out a tiny bit. I bet that's all it is. Also, is it an aftermarket mag ? The stock mags should work fine. Also, you can take your pistol to a gunsmith and have it throated and polished for a minimal price.

Springfield makes good guns, they should eat anything you feed them.

There was a guy who brought a stock springfield with factory ammo to a competition one day.  His bullets key-holed (bullet was sideways through the target) on every shot!  Ammo can make a big difference.  The OP said that with one of his mags everything ran just fine so I bet it is a mag problem.

Agreed but the gun should still run any SAAMI correct ammo in it's chambering, accuracy is another story entirely. Springfield's poly pistols are truly awesome machines.

Failure to feed is rarely an ammo issue.  Usually it can be attributed to the magazine itself.
