pups first hunt
« on: October 09, 2012, 07:11:58 PM »
my pups first hunt this weekend, were hunting with five guys and another dog, do you think it would be a good idea to split the group up and hunt with another guy and the dog by himself so he gets more one on one experience and not overwhelmed? hes only 7 months. Suggestions?

How much training has the pup been through?  Might be better off leaving the pup at home and stsrting her of easy. By yourself.  Might damage the pup having her hunt undefined so much guns at once for the first hunt.   :dunno:

ive worked with him quite a bit, i was thinking of hunting a different spot with one of the guys so i can work with him under one gun at first instead of five!

have seen young dogs ruined when introduced to shooting by multiple hunters.

I would hunt alone or with one other experienced guy.

 :yeah:

I would even ask that the one experienced guy you go with only load one shell in his gun... and thats asking a lot so you might be better off just hunting on your lonesome.

until your pup is ready, you only want to expose him to controlled situations. in hunting you can't control every thing, so button up the things you can control. :twocents:

As long as he's been introduced to decoys, other hunters and of course, being shot over. I wouldn't plan on much more than an hour hunting with a 7 month pup. Make sure you have a place to dry him off and put him to bed away from the action or, be able to walk him back to the truck in a dry, warm kennel.
