Training on release sites - phez
« on: October 08, 2012, 11:43:51 AM »
Couple questions on training a dog on a release site, are we allowed to do it and whats the rules?

I read the WDFW hunting regs and it says Bird Dog Training Season
Aug. 1, 2012-Mar. 31, 2013

with a few year around exceptions that don't cover the area I have in mind.

Are we allowed to release pigeons on these sites?
For dog training, obviously that doesn't mean shooting phez, but can I shoot pigeons I've sent from a launcher?

Would a WDFW officer have a problem with me packing around a shotgun out of the normal phez hunting season?

I normally do it on private ground, but I got a release site close by too.

I dunno? Most folks I know try to stay out of the areas just out of respect for the folks who might want to show up and hunt at any given moment. Never know when a Dad might be taking his kid out for the afternoon and just want to chase a bird or two?

Well right now everything is closed, I know they'll release more birds just before Oct 10.

The dog *might* find a hold over from the youth, over 65 hunt dates but I doubt it...Yotes get them pretty quick here.
I find a lot of carcasses after the Oct 20 opener.
One reason I don't like to hunt after the main opener as my dog finds already shot birds mostly, last year I bagged out and never fired a shot, just wounded birds flopping around :bash:

Eastern Washington
Sept. 22 & 23 (youth only) 3 cocks only 6 cocks only
Sept. 24-28 (Hunters 65 years or older only) 3 cocks only 15 cocks only
Oct. 20 - Jan. 13 3 cocks only 15 cocks only

E/WA rules a bit different than W/WA

Same deal over here. Dogs will get birds before you shoot! lol...

Well, I'm gonna do it.

I need to cull a few birds anyways and the launchers are charged up.

Season isn't open until Oct 20, so it ain't gonna hurt any hunting.

wouldn't worry about it- you'll walk the areas to set your launchers anyways so, hopefully kick out any birds which might muck up your training-
