Browning or Savage?

My son in law is tired of shooting 5 inch groups at 100 yards with his Ruger rifle and has decided to buy a new gun.  he is looking at a Browning X-Bolt and the Savage 116 with acutrigger and acustock.  He likes and wants to stick with the .270 caliber.  Any ideas would be helpfull between the two bolt action rifles listed above.

Pros and Cons would be helpfull along with personal experiences.

Have you checked the Action screws, Scope mounts, tried different bullets out of it? Taking it to a gunsmith might be cheaper then a new gun....but new guns are fun.

Browning if he's going to buy another gun. There is nothing wrong with a savage and they are accurate but that's about all you can say about them.

Price/value: Savage. Form/fit/aesthetics: Browning. Accuracy: too close to call; perhaps a slight edge to Savage.  You might also compare weight as I think the X Bolt will be a bit lighter.

There's no reason a gun should shoot 5" groups. My advice: (1) have someone else shoot the gun and see what type of groups he gets; this may be the issue or you can eliminate the shooter from the possible list of causes; (2) check all screws; (3) if you have another scope, replace the one on the gun and eliminate that from consideration; (4) check the bedding: if the gun is free floated you should be able to run a dollar bill under the barrel and not touch the stock. A poor bedding job can cause havoc.

After that, go buy a new gun!

Tell him to clean the barrel and try some different rounds.

If that doesn't work my vote is for the x bolt.

Savage makes some very accurate and functional rifles, they just tend to be "no frills". Browning on the other hand tends to be much more aesthetically pleasing and have that extra little something that makes them REALLY nice but you will pay for that. Either way I'm guessing you will be happy because who doesn't get excited when you buy a new toy?

Get a savage and after a few months your going to be wishin you went with a browning!
