Grouse hunter kills charging wolf

A ruffed grouse hunter in northern Minnesota shot and killed a wolf he said was charging at him and his dog, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

The DNR's weekly law enforcement summary includes the following report:

"(Conservation officer) Sam Hunter (of Park Rapids) took a call from a grouse hunter who had shot a timber wolf that was chasing his hunting dog. The dog ran back to the hunter with the wolf on its heels. The hunter shot the wolf at about 8 yards with bird shot as it was coming directly at him/his dog. Proper measures were taken by the hunter to notify the DNR and enforcement action was not necessary. It was a frightening experience during a grouse hunting trip that will not soon be forgotten."

Killing a wolf to protect livestock or pets is legal throughout Minnesota at any time of year, provided the kill is reported to the DNR within 48 hours.

Following the animal's removal from protections of the federal Endangered Species Act, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan have scheduled fall hunting and trapping seasons for wolves.

Minnesota's wolf hunting season starts Nov. 3, the same day as the deer firearms hunting opener. The Minnesota hunt was challenged in court.

I just got back last week from Minnesota hunting white tail.  The tree huggers got huge billboards on I35 stop the wolf hunt.  I told my mom that hunters should put up billboards next to those showing their dead pets or livestock from wolves.

I recently asked this same question. The WDWF site has specific laws that state that a person can shoot a wolf if:

a) the wolf is attacking you  [which would be really difficult because you'd be busy getting eaten]

b) there's imminent threat of an attack

I can't find the link to this info, but when I do, I'll place on here.

Huntfool, your right about the jury, but you will go broke just in attorneys' fees just getting it to a jury trial and you will throw in the towel and take a guilty plea to just get done with the Govt. harrasment.   I know, I been there.   Very sickening

I am pretty sure that currently in WA you cannot legally protect pets or livestock. If you are being attacked you can protect yourself. Please correct me if I am wrong.

If a wolf was attacking you or posed an imminent threat to your safety and you shot it in self defense, why would you bother to report it? It's always best to just keep your mouth shut and not invite big brother into your life.

Because that would imply you did something illegal and don't you know, the woods have eyes.
