Families Idaho Bull Elk 2012

Been readin some good stories of the hunt this year! Heres some of our hunt to Idaho this past september 2012. First week sloooow! Second week weather moved in and like a light switch the elk started doin what elk do this time of year. Screamin there heads off and chasin the honeys!! Our elk camp consists of me dad, mom and our 2.75yr old daughter. We keep a small camp that is very mobile in case we need to move at a moments notice. Me and the wife alternate days on who goes out solo to cover ground in search of the elusive wapiti! The other with daughter scouts out new areas and hikes as far as they can with daughter mostly on back. I got into elk at first light and kicked them around some and decided to head up to one of our treestands figureing some might come to water with all the rut activity. I got situated in stand at about 11am. Sat in pourin rain and at 4pm a spike bull came in. I had a hard time not shootin him but i had pics of a nice 5x5 that had been comein in and i was thinkin of the wife and i would save the spike for her.
About 30 minutes later i hear anantler hit a tree and here walks in a nice 6x6!!! Its game time! He stops 10yds right in front of me and rips off a bugle! Again and again!! This is why we archery elk hunt. In your face action! He turns away and goes and sticks his snout in the spring and drinks for 20min or so! The whole time with his butt towards me with no shot! He turns 180 and walks right at me coming down the game trail still no shot! Im at full draw with this bull walking directly below me at like 20ft! I could have jumped on his back! I aim just behind his shoulder and off center of the backbone and drill him! The arrow goes fletch deep all the way to his sternum. He stops and exhales and the three blade cuts ope like a pink valve! He inhales and i believe i heard his lung collaspe. He turns and goes downhill and expires!!! Then the work began. Took two days to get him packed out and that severly cut into my wife gettin an elk because we flat did not have time left to get another one that far back. She hunted lower areas with no shots but lots of close incounters. Hope all enjoy the hunt! Thanks HUNT WA for a great family site!!!
