First duck!
« on: October 28, 2012, 08:04:29 PM »
I went pheasant hunting again with Stilly today. After bagging a decent hen, we decided to go do some pass shooting at some ducks. First shot at the first pass I bagged my first duck kill. A dandy little hen pin-tail. I only winged her, but Stilly's lab made a great retrieve and brought her back to be finished off. I then proceeded to waste about a full box of shells without hitting any other ducks. When I finally ran out of shells we got buzzed at about 15 yards by like 7 more ducks that I am sure were taunting us. It was still a lot of fun though. I carried and cleaned all my own birds this time too. :)

Thanks again Stilly for a great time hunting, great conversation, and letting me hunt with you and your dogs again.

If you get a chance, try to hit the 5-stand in Stanwood on Wednesday evenings.  It can help a lot on getting after those ducks.  It's fun shooting a box of shells, but you can capitalize on some of those misses to add to your bag.
Cut em!
It's not the shells!  It's the shooter!

It probably didn't help that they weren't coming any closer than 30-50 yards until that batch that came in when I ran out of ammo. I was also using IC choke and the 2-3/4 inch shells that I had bought for pheasant. Hopefully when I go out with Kola the 3 inch shells and modified choke will help a bit.

I was so happy when I got my first. Way to go

P.S. I hate 2 3/4. I shot 3 ducks that just had the feathers go poof, and the duck kept flying  :P

Nothing wrong with 2 ¾” shells for ducks, a couple of my favorite duck guns only shoot 2 ¾” shells and they bring down birds fine.  But you do need to know the range of your fowling piece and be able to put the center of the pattern on the birds.  A few pellets in the aft end of a bird rarely gets the job done.

and then he ran out of MY ammo! Luckily I didn't bring my gun along so I didn't need it at the time.

yeah we were geared more for pheasant... when you hit the puddles with Kola I would bring 3" BB or #2's both are good all around sizes and will give your more oomph.

Thanks again Stilly for a great time hunting

Right on! Way to go.

or maybe they were laughing about the  mesh sporting clays vest OVER the white T-shirt... I wasn't going to say anything about it, but man your one snappy dresser! of course its better than hunting ducks in a blaze orange hoodie.
