Knocked one dead in Washougal!
« on: October 15, 2012, 04:27:50 PM »
Well my brother and I took off for opening day. I had done a lot of scouting in the washougal unit mostly looking for places that would get us away from the road hunters. For Saturday morning we settled on a clear cut 3 miles behind a gate. By the time we got up there someone else was sitting on the clear cut we wanted  :bash: So we hike another mile to a clear cut a bit deeper and high up the mountain. No we have made it to the clear cut finally!! unforutalty there is fog, but both my brother and I are still looking for out first deer and we aren't going to let alittle fog stop us! So settle down behind and log while my brother goes and watches the other side of the clear cut. I actually had wanted his side but he let me choose the spot for opening day and followed me 4 miles up the side of a mountain so I threw him a bone. Well it just so happened that about 30 minutes after settling down behind a log the fog started to lift a little in my draw. As it lifted I realized I was staring at a deer butt not more than 50 yards down hill of me!!!  :yike: About when I figure out this guy is a buck he turns his head to look at me....... Most of the time when I have been made by a deer they bolt, but not this guy. I slowly took off my scope covers, turned the safety off, and brought my trusty 7mm rem mag up to ready. Now I have him square in my sights but the only shot I have is his neck as lengthwise shots are a  :bdid: I thought about waiting for a broad side shot but figured and second now this guy was going to take off. So I steady my aim and bang!!! We he dropped where he stood, didn't take one step!!!  :IBCOOL:  :IBCOOL: I yell for my brother and start the celebrating. Finally got my first deer, but also found out you should think twice about shooting a deer 4 miles up on a mountain. I had been scouting and hiking the last few weeks and did okay, but my brother and father who came up later to help with gutting were a little sore the next day  8)  So now there is going to be meat in the freezer and another head on the wall!  :chuckle: Next just got to find my brother a nice buck!

Thanks to all the members for the help! Reading all your posts this year has really helped my up my game and finally land a buck! Best of luck to the rest of you!

Way to go!  First one is always a trophy!!
