HWF Member's hunt in Eastern Cape SA
« on: October 15, 2012, 10:59:02 AM »
Hi all

John Rauner just completed a hunt with me and I would like to share
some info and pictures.

Date: 6-15/10/2012
Hunter: John W R Rauner from Prosser, Washington
Rifle: 300 W Short Mag and 180gr am monition
Outfitter/ Ph: Ferdi Venter
Area Hunted: Little Karroo and Grahamstown area in the Eastern Cape
7/10
The first day we went out and bumped a herd of Impala which spooked some Kudu we were looking at.We
reached a nice spot from where we saw Blue Wildebeest and started a stalk, two Kudu cows gave our position away and we were busted.

8/10
We saw numerous Kudu on the second day and some other animals. Late Monday afternoon we saw a very good Red Hartebeest and the stalk was on. John took the shot from the sticks and hit the Hartebeest, we followed up and found the blood trail, followed the animal till dark and decided to return the next morning.
Unfortunately  the weather changed during the night and it started to rain, we never found blood again.

9/10
The weather was bad and we were able to see about 100yards due to fog. John and the owner saw Blue Wildebeest and he took the shot. We found the Wildebeest bull about 300yards from where he shot it and started with the recovery. I will post some pictures when I get them from John.

10/10
We consentrated on Kudu but bumped into some Gemsbuck and the hunt was on. John took the shot and it went a bit low. We tracked the Gemsbuck and John was able to get it down.

11/10
We moved to the Grahamstown area and arrived just before lunch, the weather was great and we relaxed during the heat of the day. Later we checked John's rifle and did minor settings.
We saw some Eland and a lot of Kudu, Blesbok, Warthog and Impala during the afternoon. Late the afternoon we found a couple of Nyala and the hunt was on.
We put in an excellent stalk and this is the result.

12/10
We were looking for Eland this morning and bumped in to them twice, we found 2 very good bulls and they gave us a slip, eventually we caught up with them and John took a great Eland.

13/10
We saw plenty Kudu this morning and finally did a stalk that payed off

We were looking for Bushbuck for the remainder of the day but with out luck.

14/10
We decided to move to the Jefferey's Bay area. During the last hour of John's last day we saw a good Bushbuck
and made a very good stalk to end his hunt.

I used Areva travel consultants Annelise Du Bose www.arevatravek.com and had no problems with my rifle or airline tickets she made all the arrangement's.. The rifle permit was at the airport as was the Greeters.

Youngbull

It really depends where you are going, if it is the Eastern Cape you have nothing to worry about.
