It is rather baffling that people seem unable to follow the four basic rules of gun safety. I'd likely have a less than rational response in the described situation.

For every one you see doing this...how many do you not?  :yike:
Are the offenders usually older (than the hunter's safety requirement)?

I agree 100% on this.  Three years ago I was glassing  a hillside below me and came across a fat, smoking dude in orange watching me with his gun/scope.  It is unnerving to say the least and poor hunting skills.  You don't point your gun at something you do not intend to shoot.

One of the reasons I hunt archery for big game. When the idiot has a bow, his chances of killing you are exponentially smaller. Sorry to hear this. Hopefully his kid will take hunter's ed this year and correct his behavior.

Had the same thing happen to me in the same area about 10 years ago.  I flipped him, shook my fist at him and his buddy, hiked out and left a nasty note on his truck.  Haven't been back to that side of Miller Hill since.

Saw it constantly this weekend. One guy with his two young kids that's all they had and all they were doing was point guns to glass. Pisses me off to see it. My binos suck, but it's a smarter and safer choice than using my scope.

I've noticed more scoping of myself by bear hunters while archery elk hunting (OR Coast) than I have noticed during rifle seasons. Key word is noticed though.

I agree with the previous poster that there could be a full page notice in the regs on this to remind people, though these folks probably don't read the regs anyways....   :bash:

Are there any hunting infractions which require the re-taking of Hunter Education? If someone were caught by a gamie doing this, it should qualify. Shooting the wrong animal, loaded gun in the car, etc. What do you guys think?

I hunt in goose area 2A. If you shoot a Dusky, you have to re-take the goose test to go hunting in 2A or 2B again. I think if it's shown that you're unsafe with a firearm, you should have to retake Hunter Education. I've had to re-take the goose test and it makes you really think before pulling the trigger on a goose again.

I literally laughed out loud at this, but I do like the idea.  May have to make one up!

I really like this idea as well.  Something like the statute that can require driver's to have to retest under certain conditions or loose their driver's licenses.

If it was possible, I would love to see someone's license taken away for glassing with their scope.  I think it would be difficult to prove however.  I've had it happen several times that I know of, with the last time three years ago on Mt. Townsend.  I should have hiked up the hill and laid into him, but I just flipped him the bird and continued down the ridge.

I agree.  I see people go get their tags and not even want a copy of the regs.  The transactions are similar to:
Dude:  Uh, When's deer season?  I think I need a tag.
Clerk:  Starts next weekend.
Dude:  Does that cover this area?
Clerk:  Yeah.
Dude:  What can I shoot?
Clerk:  Any buck.
Dude:  Oh okay.  Give me a tag.
Clerk:  Is that all.
Dude:  Uh, is it bear season.  I might need one of those too.
Clerk:  Yes.
Dude:  Yeah, I'll take one of those too.
Clerk:  Do you need a free regs pamphlet?
Dude:  Nah, can't understand them anyways.

i am all for somethn happening to these idiots, i would rather see their huntn right revoked for LIFE, like what was said earlier "ya cant fix stupid" i learned at a very young age to not point a weapon at something you dont intend to kill, when i went in the service, i was in a unit that required us pointing weapons at people all the time, and i could still hear my dad wispering in my ear, it took awhile for me to not have that uneasy feeling, but it quickly comes back in the woods, binos and bino buddys are an awesome investment, and get a safari sling while your getn binos, your gun hangs perfect and it makes it alot easier to use your binos...
my grandpa always said "if it aint broke dont fix it"
