Blacktail- morning, mid-day, or evening?
« on: October 16, 2012, 04:22:57 PM »
I wanted to see what time of day most people have harvested their blacktail. A general time would be great, maybe there is a pattern? I would start, but I have yet to harvest a blacktail.....or any deer.  :bash:  :bash:  :bash:

Killed all of mine in the a.m. but have seen the biggest bucks right before dark, for the most part. Also, I have killed all of mine in the timber and those big ones I have seen, I seen them from the rig while driving out. Killed my only 4x4 in it's bed at 11:30a.m., that is the latest in the day that I have ever killed a blacktail.

Over twenty years hunting and killing blacktail and there is no specific time of day..they are predictabley unpredictable.

I can say the least amount I have harvested hase been at day break. Typically mid/late morning.

All times of the day when it comes to late October. The pre-rut and rut do funny things to those bucks, pack a lunch and plan on staying out all day.

Elaborate on the tide book statement, please. What do we look at for tides?

I assume he is refering to how the moon phase affects fishing, as it does most animals.

Ive killed 10-12 blacktail and i dont think one has been after noon.  I focus on the first hour after daylight then around 10 am to noon.  If you have done your homework on an area and know where the deer live, i am in position 2 hours before daylight, letting things calm down, and waiting for light.  Then i will sit and wait for something to move for the next hour or two depending on the conditions and visibilty.  Then start to move and hit up as many spots i can till around noon.  Take a lunch and break till 1 or so, then go on the move again till about 2 hours before dark.  Then have a spot in mind, get there and sit and wait again up until dark. But like i said, nothing beats that first two hours of daylight, IF YOU HAVE DONE YOUR HOMEWORK.  If you are gonna be somewhere two hours before the sun comes up, you better have an idea of what is in the area and where they should be.

From daylight till dark, and anytime in between..The best pattern I can say is that you have to be out there as much time as possible..

Plus,, the less people driving the roads the better

or as in Tony's case, take your daughter out there and pick some mushrooms, and they'll just walk right up to you.
