Hunted with my Dad today...
« on: October 17, 2012, 12:56:01 PM »
...for the first time since he passed away in 1998. I know, I just painted him on my gun, but it was a really neat experience to be able to look down and see him there with me. He was a kind, gracious, and great man, and we used to hunt together all the time. I really miss him, especially on days like today.

My setter Briar wanted in on the action too:

Nice tribute you have there.  Your father will now experience the hunt and companionship for years to come

Beautiful Gun, Dog and story. I hunt with my late grandfathers guns and it really bring something extra to the hunt for me. Wish he was here to show me how its really done.

Great post man.

That's a really nice tribute to your father and says a lot about the son he raised as well.  Have a great season together

very cool tribute! that gun is big medicine!

I am always jealous of folks with hunting families and traditions.

I can't thank my dad enough for getting me into hunting... he is a militant anti-hunter and I think I mainly took up hunting to piss him off when I was a teenager... oh well worked out in the end.

That is awesome. I too come from a hunting heritage handed down from my father who passed away in 2009. Tough being in the woods without them. I have special wraps on my arrows in his memory. These things are important.

Great way to remember your father.

Thanks again everyone.  Turning guns into art makes the whole experience more meaningful for me.  Just for grins, here's what this little 5.7lb 16ga hammer gun looked like before I did all the work to it:

I'm working on this 12ga damascus hammer gun right now to pair with it:

It's an idea I've wanted to do for 7 or 8 yrs.    The right side of the stock will have a cropped half lion face staring at you, and to its right will be a fleur de lis opening its wings and morphing into a bird in three stages, and some vines/leaves to mimic the receiver metal engraving.   The left side will have the same half lion face, and vines/leaves,  except with his mouth open showing his teeth, and a naked woman lying down in the cheek rest area.  It's a yin/yang concept, showing our spiritual and primal sides and our duality as men.  The right side is titled "Fleur de Lion," the left side is "Primal."

if anyone asks you about the barrel constriction on that gun; you can always say your choked primal for up close and personal shots and spiritual for those poke and hope shots... :chuckle:

I can't wait to see that concept wrapped around that gorgeous hammer gun.

In the vein of "art with a nice gun attached to it", I finished the Belgian 12 hammer gun.  As mentioned previously, this piece of art is titled "Duality."

Wow, thank you very much.   I always get a bit nervous showing this kind of work, because some people feel it is way over the top.  I don't care though.   I like pushing the envelope.   "Gungasm!"  Hilarious! :chuckle:   :IBCOOL:
