Out of the velvet
« on: August 28, 2008, 09:20:35 PM »
Saw four different bucks coming home from work this morning.  All four were out of the velvet.  3 of them were 2pts, and one of them was a 3pt.  First bucks I have seen out of velvet this year.  Sorry no pics.

Yep!  Immagine what the highcountry smells like!  I'm feeling snow for the opening of the highhunt...

Most of the bigger bucks that I have seen lately are all rubbed off and the little guys are still packing.

Saw a real nice 3x3 blacktail outside Monroe a couple days ago...it was with a smallish 2x2. Both were still in full velvet.
I left it better than I found it...did you?

I saw a buck last night that that was out of velvet and out of his summer coat. It was a 20-22" 2pt, but barely two on one side, almost a 2x1. It was cool to see him gray compared to the red ones he was with.

Saw a 2x2 and a spike just outside Stanwood last night right at dusk.
Both still in velvet, and standing on the shoulder of old 99. I almost took the rack off the 2pt with my side mirror!

According to my buddy's trail cam, the bucks in our area are still in velvet as of the 29th.  We'll see tomorrow.

my son & I went out last night to check on our farmer friends oat fields and how the elk are behaving in 'em and saw about 100 deer and EVERY buck we saw was still in velvet.
