My 1st Deer
« on: October 18, 2012, 10:11:30 PM »
Well, I'll skip the boring part. He bedded down about 350 yds out in the open. So I stayed downwind and worked the tree line to with in about 100 yds. Then belly crawled to with in about 40 yds. Waited about 20 min for him to stand up while debating a neck shot. He finally gave it to me... boom! Omg, missed up and right 6 ft! He turned and gave me another... so this time readjusted, boom! Missed by 2 ft. Lesson learned, don't tap scope on anything hard while crawling. This time he took off for the trees. Thought it might be over, but I decided to sneek to the top of the ridge above him. Once there I glassed him in the trees... he stayed put for awhile, then headed down the treeline. I realized I had to get ahead of him, so I took off running, grabbed my knife, and started unscrewing my scope with the knife while my binos were bouncing in my face! Dropped the scope and binos and beat him to the edge of the timber. I dropped prone next to a little fir and waited not more than 2 min. He popped out and was walking like he was late for an appointment  ;). I gave him a a couple audible clicks and he stopped dead in his tracks. Boom! 80-90 yds with irons. Instant drop! I couldn't believe it. It was so tired from running and holding still, my body just froze. I laid there for 5 min before I cud even think straight. What an amazing experience! I'm officially hooked for life.
BTW, picture through the binos worked pretty good.
Got him with my Savage 99 250. I think I'm going to retire it to the safe and get a gun I won't feel bad about dragging through the weeds.
Sorry about the lame pics, I was too excited and by myself. Oh and don't mind the messy work truck.

Congrats, I killed my first deer with a 250 Savage also. But I would never put a scope on it, those iron sights are spot on.

Holy crap! Talk about commited to the kill. Fine job sir, fine job and a great buck for a first, last, or any deer in the line.

Given your screen name, I thought your 1st deer would be a spike....   :chuckle:  Way to stick with it.  Lucky you had a mount that you could remove.  I have an old Remington that has a tip-off scope mount which is handy.  Had to get it out of the way once to shoot a big bear in the rain.

Nice job!

My first deer was taken with an open sighted Savage 99 too. Very cool.
