First late blacktail hunt!
« on: November 11, 2012, 10:44:28 PM »
Hey! I'm 16 and this year my dad and I will be going on the late blacktail hunt. This will be my first deer hunt and I could use some help! We are from Arizona and my dad has no idea where to hunt up here but we were planning on going near dewatto. Does anybody know of any good spots up there? Thank you very much!

I've hunted this area most of my life, and will be hunting for the late hunt too. There is an exceptional area that is usually not full of others on Bear Creek Rd just past Tahuya Blacksmith Rd. It is also a WDFW pheasant release site if you're into that too. There are several logging road in there, it is walk-in only, and you can seriously walk all day and not see another hunter even at the peak of modern rifle. Give it a try, I would go scout it in the next couple days to pick out your favorite spots if I were you.
If that is not doable, I would head over to the other side of the Hood Canal to the Coyle/THorndike area. Just past the bridge, past the turnoff for Port Townsend are numerous prime areas owned and operated by Olympic Resource Management. The map of some of the area is here http://www.orm.com/LinkClick.aspx?fileticket=a6edCocF3Lw%3d&tabid=95] http://www.orm.com/LinkClick.aspx?fileticket=a6edCocF3Lw%3d&tabid=95. Lots of road hunter there, so your best bet is to find a locked gate and hit the trail. All the road hunters keep the deer in the woods, so that's where I stick to.
Ethics is doing the right thing even when you know no one is looking.

Thank you for all the info! I'm sure it will help a lot especially if we get time this week to go scouting. Thanks again!
