The rifle is a sporterized 7mm Mauser mod 9X , the rifle was my brothers first gun when he was a kid then he gave it to our oldest son who in turn gave it his younger brother, and so on, any way it has taken a bear, cow elk and several deer and always functioned fine over the years.
My wife and daughter went deer hunting this week end (I stayed home to work) when my wife went to load it she said she was just about to turn the bolt down and KA-BOOM
The bolt dislocated her thumb then flew back and hit her in the chest,,, they stood in shock for a bit, wife not knowing if she still had all of her parts? After assessing the situation they decided that they should get to the hospital, the doctors splint the thumb, examined her chest for internal injuries, gave her a prescription pain killer, monitored her for some time and released her. She is a little bruised and sore but she will be fine.
At the hospital, apparently injuries involving firearms are a reportable incident, to the state feds or both? Not sure, anyway the staff decided that that would be a bunch of useless paper work and sent them on their way.

firing pin break? the bolt wasn't closed all the way? very glad the injuries weren't worse!

I'm pretty sure reporting is just done to the local po-po. No reason for the ATF to get involved. If they DO show up, just tell them that you planned to sell it to someone in Mexico--then they'd be out of there faster than you can say 'furious'

Actual gunshot wounds have to be reported. I don't see any need to report this, no crime, no foul.

Yea, if it should get reported, it should be to the Consumer Product Safety Administration.

BTW, that's not a Mod 98. It's a small ring 93/95/96. if it's Swedish, it's a 96, Mexico or Europe 93/95. it's a cock on close action with no third lug safety (not that that would have helped in this case!).

when the bolt came all the way out of the receiver, did it shear a front locking lug off the bolt, or destroy the bolt stop?

She said her injuries will prevent her from baiting a hook, casting or retrieving, but when your pole has a strike she can still yell "fish on" and claim the pole as her's

When she was loading this had she

1. Loaded all the rounds into the magazine and then fed one into the chamber by allowing the bolt to pick it up and push it out of the magazine.

2. Dropped one down into the chamber and then was in the process of closing the bolt on top of it.

That is some very scary stuff for sure!! I would say your wife is very lucky she didn't lose a finger/s or worse yet and eye.

I'd say she deserves a gift certificate to her favorite gun shop after what she just went thru. It'll be MUCH cheaper to buy her a new rifle of her choice versus replacing her. Besides, you don't wanna go thru the hassle of training a new one.

Glad that she is ok. The rifle seem to be a Mod 93 or 95 due to the bolt shroud.

I would say a 93 and now it will make me nervous the next time I shoot mine. Holly smokes, I've seen much worse. One of those un foreseeable things. Best of luck on her recovery.

I had a 93 that dry fired when closing the bolt. Took it to a rifle smith (had just picked this up from FFl after buying it on Gun Broker) He didn't seem too concerned, but I never trusted it after that.

So glad she is ok! Looks sore though. So I wonder if the it fired during the closing of the bolt, or did it not re cock leaving the pin exposed and fired when she slammed in the shell? Anyway, glad she is ok! I guess you folks have a good excuse to go gun shopping now! Maybe a 7mm-08 in a Browning A-bolt?

thanks all, as far as the model goes I was told it was a 98 years ago and went with it?,,, don't assume is the lesson learned.

we had a discussion about what to do with the gun now?? it was decided that it would go back in the gun safe, front and center to be a reminder when ever the safe is opened the importance of muzzle control and firearm safety, ALWAYS
