Bear hide question
« on: October 20, 2012, 12:34:16 PM »
I wanted to ask how I'm doing, what i did right/wrong, and my next step.

I got a black bear last week. i skinned and caped it. I did not turn the lips or ears on the head-hide. I cut the paws out down to the last didget
I salted the hide 2 times, 24 hours each time. then I got home and put it in the freezer.

not sure how I did so far, but let me know. I thought my next step would be get it to a taxi, but just looking for feedback on what I've done so far.
thanks.

You have done just fine. As long as it got cooled out it should be just fine for a taxi.

So far it sounds like you have done just fine.  I've always been told from other taxidermists NOT to salt a hide and than freeze it.  One of the main reasons is that a salted hide will not freeze all the way.  Kinda like putting salt on Ice, it melts it.

I get several capes and hides brought to me every year that have been salted and frozen and they have been fine so far.  They do thaw out a LOT faster than a non salted hide put in the freezer.

The thing to think of is did you split the ears?  Turn the lips and nose?  If not you didn't get any salt on those areas.  Therefore the salt is not preserving those areas.

I'd say you shoud look at getting it to a taxidermist here pretty quick.

thanks all. i kinda new the salted area would freeze slow, if at all, but i was mainly looking to make sure the unsplit lips and unturned ears and the last didget in the toes got frozen.

looking for a taxi today. can anyone recommend a taxi in the Bothell/MillCreek/Everett area? or in the PS area?

Most taxidermists are around 150-190 a ft. Skulls are around 90-175 depending on who you take it to.

Not sure on the green hide in a freezer question.
