New pup for bird hunting but not sure if she will be good.
« on: November 04, 2012, 01:46:08 AM »
I just got a new pup she's a pointer and blue heeled mix. I know the pointers are good but not to sure if the cattle dog will taint her ability. How should I go about training her for birds? Any suggestions will be good

Get her around birds as much as you can.  Also get her used to gunfire but carefully, don't want to scare her.  Shooting a cap gun from a distance when you give her food works well.

Healers are generally really smart dogs.  I had a lab healer mix that I could give a ball or bird to and tell her to fetch to a person she knew with the command "Fetch to....".  She knew about dozen names.  I could also throw a ball, frisbee, adn stick and tell her to get whichever one I wanted in whatever order I wanted.

However, the smartness also lead to an easily bored dog that got into trouble.  The key to that turned out to be a mile or two run next to my bike every day after work.

The healer genes might make it harder to get her to hold to a point since they like to "guide" what they are chasing or looking for.

Good luck and have fun.
