Biggest Bear ???????????????
« on: October 23, 2012, 10:26:24 AM »
Really new to hunting and never been after a bear at all but i was wondering what the biggest bear weight wise you have heard of or seen in washington taken with a bow ?

Also , is it recommended to hunt one out of a tree stand when using a bow or off the ground ? What kind of terrain / alttitude would be good to look in ?
The only person who has failed is the one who never tried.

hear of is one thing and weighing is another.    A 300 pound bear is a really nice bear in Washignton.  A 400 pound bear is a giant.   Anything bigger than that is USUALLY myth.    There is an occasional monster that has been "cropping" up.   the average nice  bear is probably 150-200 at best.

any style of hunting depending on what you like will work.   Its generally most effective to spot and stalk unless you are on a trail to or from a food source.  Baiting is illegal.   Bear are where the food is, ESPECIALLY this time of year.

I'm sure you heard about this bear taken between Silverdale and Seabeck. It was shot about 15 minutes from my parents place. One of those giant mythical bears that are an extreme rarity.

Methow bear. My buddy had him hanging at 318# clean. Add 150-175# conservedly for the head, hide, paws and tallow, 16-18% for viscera and you have one big bear. killed several in the 500# + range, but none this big! A toad!

My son shot a bear last year in Winthrop that hanging at the meat locker weighed 226 pounds. Which I have been told would put the bear at 425-450lbs the skull is 20 1/8. I had never seen a bear that big before and don't think we will top it.

I saw three nice bears this fall that topped 600 lbs actually.  I mean, the three combined.  :chuckle:

I don't think that bear weighs 600 lbs man.    :sry:

I haven't been around a lot of dead bears but it takes a huge frame and tons of food for a bear to make 350, not sure where 250 more would go on a Washington bear.
Kindly do not attempt to cloud the issue with too many facts.

I've been huntin bear for close to fifty years.  Many of those years with hounds and over bait, until illegal.  My dad and uncle guided bear hunters for 25 years and I've seen one bear in all those years weigh 600 lbs.  He was killed over a bait with his belly full which was probably close to 75 lbs in food or more.  The average bear in Washington and Oregon weighs around 133 lbs  from what I remember.  I've seen a couple over 500, a few over 400 and many over 300, but 5 and 600 lb. bear are few and far between.  This was and is in Ok. & Chelan Co.

Can't see the pic, but I've only seen one Washington bear that weighted in at 500 lbs, and it was a huge pig of a bear. Shot by a Steve A. years ago.

Those that know Steve, and have seen the bear, know what I'm talking about....sure wish I could see another...or two!

My biggest bear was probably around the 350-375# mark when alive.... That is a pig of a WA bear.... Most people really over judge size of bears.... For instance... My friend dropped one last year.... I asked him how big.... He said at least 300 pounds.... I said *censored*.... Got there to see and feel that there's no way it was more then 180-200 live weight...... Nice bear but not near 300#.... He said he couldn't believe how much bigger he thought it was....

Mountainman.... It's a great bear.... I highly doubt it's much over 400# alive.... Which is a huge mountain bear for here... Congrats... But nowhere near 600#... These bear aren't all salmon fed 9 months of the year.....

Great bear but not 600#.
Give 75-85 for head and hide + 40 (50 tops) for guts and for giggles lets give it 50 for fat ...
and your barely over 500.

Like I said great bear, but the math don't work.

I've shot a few big bears, the biggest was right around 435 lbs field dressed.  That bear was 7'-6" nose to tail and was 22 yrs old.  He would have stretched the scales a little more if he was healthy but he was missing half of one of his front paws and that leg was atrophied pretty bad.  If I remember correctly that front quarter weighed 40-50 lbs less than the other front quarter.  Let me tell you 7'-6" is a huge black bear and unless a bear was dragging its belly on the ground and looked like a butterball turkey it would be extremely hard to get over 500 lbs.

Most bears in this state that weigh over 400 lbs are grizzly I'd say.

A bear over 300 is a trophy from my experience.

When you see a monster bear in a picture that most people say weighs 600 lbs, it's like a 350 lb boar.

I was about to mention that. An average inland grizz is 400-600 pounds

This thread reminds me of the "average weight of a mature blacktail" thread.

A true 300# bear is a toad. We need Bearpaw to chime in with weights and pictures, they shoot some big bears and regularly weigh them.
