BG unit help
« on: October 23, 2012, 03:44:01 PM »
I am taking a 10 yo out on fri for his first deer, he has been out with his dad a few times and has yet to see one, the BG unit is either sex, full of deer and 99% private.. he is all about shooting a doe.... I have some land to hunt on in said unit but its not the "slam dunk" I am wanting for a 10 yo boy, we see deer and kill them yearly but its not a every night/ morning deal... I am really looking for a place that is a more "sure thing" as sure as it can be hunting. IMO getting youth involved in the outdoors is the more important thing we can do, but he needs to see some game and hopefully put one down. I am willing to trade work, a few fishing trips ( I have a boat and get lucky and hook a fish from time to time) some elk meat.... even maybe take you hunting over east on some private land for deer... I am open to any and all help..... just want to get this kid on a "easy" first deer to get the fire started inside him we all feel.

BG is 99% private??? I know there are deer up there but with all the recreational "Activities" going on the numbers have declined (Since I was a young buck).. I always saw way more deer on the back side past the prison, more towards Shougal than anything.. but you have ALOT of time to fill his tag and get him on a deer.. That's if they still have the Super late season Late November through Dec. 31st. Good luck!!

Check the GoHunt Mapping service on Washington state department's site. If you look directly east of the town of battle ground. There is a little bit a state land and I have hunted it before but stopped as I prefer my rifle to my shotgun. Just pay close attention to the maps because its really easy to stumble onto private ground. Otherwise the washougal unit can be good too.

Don't forget BG is bows and arrows, crossbows, muzzleloaders, revolver-type handguns meeting equipment restrictions, or legal shotguns firing slugs or buckshot.

PM sent.
He asked, Do you ever give a short simple answer?  I replied, "Nope."

Well good luck to you! You may want to try setting some apples out in an area a few days before you plan to hunt out there with a kid to try and draw some of the does out. I guess i had 7 years of hunting before nailing my first buck, but just being out in the woods with my father and getting to watch animals kept me happy. That being said I was ecstatic when I shot my first deer!

If you pm me I will tell you where this buck lives and it would be good for a kid to shoot a doe or small buck.It is in BG unit and is public ground but hunted very little.I must have a promise from you that this hunt will be for the kid and not your new honey hole.

Date on the pic looks to be a while ago. BG is a lot smaller these days north and east of the shoug. They moved the borders maybe 3 years back. Still some public north and east of woodland. None of it a slam dunk though unless your hunting pumpkins. Sounds like you need someone with an apple tree or two on the back 40.
It's illegal to trade fish or game for gain so you may want to rethink that approach.

Live in battle ground unit and have lots of land to hunt. But have no idea who you are. How about a bio about you and the kid you plan on taking. I have helped in past but need to know who I am helping.

The BG unit is hard to hunt as stated due to very limited access. And you can only hunt the State areas if you have a discover pass. Lots of people, lots of private property, and most of the deer population is on private property or right in town! :yike: And although someone on here said the season for the BG unit might extend very late, it does not, and hasn't for around 10 years. And that was due to the amount of property being bought up at a rapid rate. People were shooting deer in people's driveways and arguing this was their spot for many years, but private land is private land. If you know someone with land in the unit, that may or may not be a bonus. I have access to a small private area, but have never seen deer on it, and the owner forgets to lock his gate from time to time, so it gets trespassers on it (tell-tale Busch light cans, atv tracks.)

Your best bet? Well, in SW WA there are no sure bets :dunno: Hunt hard, hunt early, hunt late. Keep your eyes and ears open for people with property. Bribes sometimes work! Doesn't have to be fish or game, maybe pizza, or concert tickets or something! :chuckle: Good luck! Hope he is able to get something!
That wasn't me! It was a black Camaro! It went that way!
