Vail or not worth it or???
« on: October 25, 2012, 08:57:33 AM »
I am thinking about taking my wife down to the Vail this weekend to do a little deer hunting.  Because of family stuff I haven't been able to get her out hunting yet this year.  I didn't think I would be able to get her out at all but last minute it looks like I can this weekend.  So I am trying to figure out what might the our best option.  I have hunted down in the Vail once with my son for a youth permit a few years ago and once on opening day and that was crazy as you all know.  But I was wondering how it is on the last weekend of the season as far as numbers of hunters.  I know it will be a good bit, but wondering if the numbers fall off a little bit as the season move on.  I am looking over maps and what not thinking if there is somewhere else to take her this weekend.  I don't know a lot about the west side.  I have done most of my deer hunting on the east side over the years.  So any advise or tips would be cool.  Thanks.

If last weekend was any indication, I would try somewhere else.  Even the Weyco employees who hunt during the week are having trouble finding decent bucks.  This week the bucks are starting to rut but will quickly go into hiding as soon as the pumpkin parade begins.

Not to point out the obvious but if it's the only area you're familiar with and you want to go hunting, you might as well give it a try.

I know Vail is crazy with hunters but there are still tons of deer in there, I'd do it if I were you.
Kindly do not attempt to cloud the issue with too many facts.

If you go to vail and actually hunt, as in get out of your truck, you'll see deer. Last year was my first year hunting vail and I was fully expecting to see the "pumpkin patch" in the woods, there were a bunch of pumpkins, but these pumpkins drove trucks all day. In my experence the majority of "hunters" glass clear cuts from the road at day break and then start driving around. Dont let the numbers scare you off, if you pick a patch of woods and hunt it you'll get into deer.

Exactly. I get into the timber patches and let everyone push the deer to me. I hardly ever see hunters until I get back onto the roads.

If you're not a lazy road hunter and actually get your boots dirty all day you will find deer. Finding bucks can be hard but they are there. Getting closer to the rut everyday now.

I guess some people just get all the luck.  I've been walking a mile or so in vail, I have not seen anything, but blaze orange and vehicles.  Well, two deers at the check station.

You're in the wrong area then. You need to find gates that are out of the way and can't be accessed from vehicles on the mainline roads. You also need to walk more than a mile in most cases. I didn't keep count but I'd say I'm upwards of 50 miles on my boots for the last week.
