Author Topic: Mason 633 Unit. Is it worth the time and drive? (Read 12089 times)

Has anyone hunted the Mason 633 Unit this year? I was thinking about heading out that way this weekend but havnt been up there but maybe twice while jeeping at tahuya. Is the deer hunting any good out there? Or is there somewhere closer to home that would be a better choice?

First, do you know its firearm restricted? Not to be a smartass just incase you didn't know and don't have a shotgun or muzzleloader.

I live in the unit, quite a few deer but lots of hunters... I hunt neighboring units if that tells you anything. I do get deer come into my yard and they come off huntable land to get there, of course they don't show up until dark.

yeah i plan on either using my .357 revolver or my bow havnt decided yet. Was just wondering if its worth the time driving out there.

Not all of it is restricted though, the highway 3/ agate.belfair area is open to rifles.

Correct, I've never even stepped foot in the woods up there so I never even think of that as mason unit.

I guess its a tough call on if its worth the drive or not. I drove your direction last weekend to hunt. If you know some spots around here to go it might be worth a shot, I do believe we probably have more deer.

yeah theres just really nothing in my area so im trying out new places. Just trying to find that right spot. Hunted vail last weekend and there are too many idiots up there and didnt see any shootable deer so am going to try somewhere else this weekend.

Vail is the biggest joke ever, unless you're a lazy piece of dump that can't walk a few miles, which I doubt you are. So go for it! the only reason I said it isn't worth the drive is because I don't want it to turn into Vail.

I agree we just walked a few trails back away from everyone and came out on a clear cut and just sat there for hours glassing the clear cuts and watching everyone drive around. It's pretty rediculous. Im from ohio and grew up in a tree stand hunting white tail and when i started hunting here last year we went to vail because we were told thats the place to be on the west side and that place i a joke. I have never seen anything like that in my life. Im staying here in washington after getting out of the military a couple months ago so im trying all different areas till i find a decent spot.

madmack i agree i was there last week at the end of baldhill biked in behind a gate and some tweakers busted out a guys truck window and stool nothing but his cd's

There is plenty of vehicle traffic here too, so don't think you will be alone.

I was just out at one of the gates by my house, it's been locked the last couple years I figured that was the new norm but it's open with a green dot. Bummer.

Yeah thats almost anywhere in western washington ive seen so far. Im use to it by now. But i will end up all alone when i get out and walk. no road hunting for this guy.

The Mason Unit is not huge. The area on the Kitsap peninsula is even smaller....
For the most part, it is not worth your drive.
These guys hit it on the head, "Tons of trucks, and people".

So if you don't mind Mixing it up with 8 other trucks when you park at a gate in the morning, then by all means go ahead.

But if you want my opinion. Not that many deer.

I live in the mason unit and hunt deer just around my house we usually do good, and I see you did too. It was a great day to be out hunting with the heavy rain we had.

Well like i said this guy was hot on a does tail or i probably would have never seen him. Ive been out to the area a few times before but at the orv park and never seen a deer out there in the middle of the day.

The firearm restriction area isnt very big just a sliver of the unit, but I hunt muzzie in 633 so the restriction doesn't affect me for the late season. Very cool getting your first Wa deer with the 357.

Well i wasnt too sure what part was restricted an what wasnt so i played it safe and didnt really mind. Im pretty accurate with that gun and it was more of a challange.

I've killed a lot of deer out of the Mason unit... It's loaded with deer... Every year there's more and more traffic in a bunch of places there didn't use to be... For late season this year I'll be in the Skok...

Got tired of the road hunters in Mason and found a nice locked gate and put leather to dirt. Toward midday found a nice doe and followed her, when the buck finally made his appearance, it was brush pickers that came roaring around a road I couldn't see on the opposite side of the clearcut that blew me chance for me.....It's a good area, but tough to get away from everyone. I prefer solitude.
