How much?
« on: October 25, 2012, 03:36:09 PM »
Any suggestions on how much food a 1 year old Brittany should be fed each day?   :dunno: He weighs about 35 lbs. right now.  He is pretty active as we hunt the weekends and he jogs about 4 miles with me at least a couple mornings a week.  Right now I am feeding him 2.5 cups total...1.5 in morning and 1 in the evening.  Any help with his feeding schedule would be much appreciated.

The reason I ask is that he is always acting hungry...scrounging the house for snacks.

I just keep the food dish full on mine, always have.  She's still lean almost 4 years later.  With that said she's not a pig at the bowl either, when I fill it up she doesn't come running.  She'll eat a little then wander off, not like my pig labs that would scarf down the whole bowl.

I feed loyal active dog.

Oh ya, even with a full feed dish they still scrounge the house for snacks  :chuckle:
They wanna eat what your eating

Does your Britt come running then gobble down the whole bowl in one setting?  Like the food is going to run away if he doesn't get it down RIGHT NOW?  :chuckle:

If not, then you might be able to get away with free feeding.

Our three year old Britt gets ~3cups total for a day, split into morning and evening feedings (he's generally on the larger side of the scale for a Britt). If we go much more, he packs on the pounds. Now that it is hunting season, we may go a bit more depending on activity level. It sounds like you are in the ballpark for total volume, the key is to watch his weight and adjust accordingly. Generally, more activity = more required energy/food.

I think it also depends on the dog food.  Some of the cheaper foods are just filler which you will find in your yard later but isn't as nutritious as a smaller amount of higher quality feed.  You sound like your in the ballpark for volume though.
