I Shoot Hens
« on: October 27, 2012, 06:53:02 PM »

I'm a Hen Killer.  :'(   The only way i can sleep at night is to remind myself I'm hunting for meat.  "you can't eat the feathers" right?  don't they all taste the same?  Meat in the freezer is what it's all about.  The majority of my birds get shredded and squished into pepperoni ("duckeroni").  Some get cooked whole into fancy duck dishes that are decent at best, but thats usually the birds from the first hunt of the season, after that it's into the freezer till spring, because the cajun or peking duck breasts we had the other night just weren't all that good and duckeroni is awesome........ plus a stick goes really good with my morning coffee.
Yesterday at first light I doubled on greenheads, and then they turned into hens when they hit the mud. That will change your attitude on picking out birds real quick.  A couple days ago I dropped a greenhead that didn't have a green head, in my defense it was still a drake.  Maybe I should have my eyes checked?  Mom always said I'd go blind!  She may have been right.  Maybe the geese are to blame?  who can tell the difference between boy and girl geese?  nothing wrong with shooting those hens.  Why not shoot the lady Mallards? oh yeah because the limits 2,  but then why do they taste just as good?  Ah well,  the hunting is just starting to get hot and my freezer is just starting to fill up.

Widgeon

Still don't know if this is a female, I just like the picture because it was good retrieve.

If it flies, it'll end up in the freezer.  That's the way I look at it.  Have yet to get my bull sprig for the wall (I have a few trophies I want), but the hens are in the freezer waiting to be turned into duckaroni.

Just remember that they don't all taste the same.  So, picking and choose can be a wise choice at times.

"I Shoot Drakes" and usually end up shooting a hen or two by accident anyways usually due to dawn or dusk light conditions. So you guys who shoot two hens intentionally first and try to get 5 more drakes be careful cuz chit happens :o

Soak em in orange juice or pineapple juice and they all taste the same.

Slow day today, shot a pair of hens right off the bat then only had a widgeon and a greenhead come close enough to I.D.     2 suzies in the blind right off the bat definitely changes my shooting, I was in the close range mindset when 1000 snow geese tried to land on me then flaired 30-40 yards up and I didn't shoot.  :bash:  No geese for me.

Well, the limit is 2 for a reason. I agree. Brown feathers taste just as good as Green ones.
