Just spend this past weekend scouting Rimrock and Nile. Only saw 3 elk in Rimrock, no deer, no grouse. Very thick in there. Seems like those with quads have the advantage to get further back off the road. Lots of ground to cover in a short amount of time, so didn't get to spend as much time on foot as I'd hoped. I'll be hunting general archery with no bull tag, but I was surprised at how thick much of that area is. It was difficult to find areas that I could set up and glass. For someone like me that is totally unfamiliar with the area, it was like trying to find a needle in a haystack, knowing where to start.
Nile was much more open and easier to see and navigate in, but from the Harvest reports, it seems like LOTS of hunters will be in that area. Good learning trip, but I was disappointed in the results or lack thereof that I got. LOTS of Jeep crews cruising the area, some of which blasted up onto roads clearly marked "No motorized vehicles of any kind". They didn't seem to be hunters, but weekend rock crawling warriors.
Hope they're not out tearing up the countryside during archery season!

Just a word of advice...the elk in RIMROCK will not be seen from the road.
you need to get out and HIKE HIKE HIKE....
i learned that the first weekend i was over there.
we saw a ton of elk but all were about a mile from the road.
even if you dont have a quad, you really need to get outta the truck and hike straight up and down.
the elk love the thick crap especially when the jeeps and hunters are out.
but im sure this is all old news to you.
good luck
im going back over again this weekend, and i have a specific spot i am hiking all weekend.

Actually, I'm new to elk hunting so not everything is 'old news' for me with the wapati, but I agree, you're not really gonna see many animals (of any kind) from the road. My problem was I was trying to cover so much ground, just to see the general country in order to determine which unit to hunt, that I was forced to spend most of the time driving through the units. I wanted to check out Rimrock, Nile, Bumping (not much vehicle access there) and Manashtash. Only got to Rimrock and Nile. I did some hiking (mostly in Rimrock) and ran into one archery hunter scouting on a quad with a bull tag. He had seen about 30 elk (7 spikes and a few rag horn bulls with the rest cows) mostly up high near the ridges.
I wanted to scout more this year, but other obligations and gas prices prevented more trips.

Backwoods, gota watch how high ya go cause the Cowiche unit is on top of Divide Ridge, Roads up there and those guys go down for bulls. Think benches part way up away from jeeper and quads

If I remember right it is a foot trail off of the main trail that goes toward suprise lake. It was a great area I did not see any elk that morning and I was wondering why. On the way out we ran into some cowboys that told us they have been rounding up MO MO cows up there for the last three days.

yeah thats the story on the dirt street is that they are rounding up their bovine before the hunting season so they dont get shot.
thats a good idea and i dont get spooked in the woods by one of those bohemiths.
going up this weekend to tie a big one to a tree.

Had a Moo Cow run in in the 49 degree unit two years ago. Just before dark and two cam up a draw from behind me and let out a bellow and I crapped all over right there. They were trotting right at me looking for a handout, I would guess. Was surpirsed how quiet the walked, that or I am REALLY hard of hearing!
