29 years old, and I finally dropped my first blacktail buck!!
« on: October 31, 2012, 09:24:30 PM »
Well it's been 10 days since i wacked my masher blackie, but I had to celebrate so I went to vegas after butchering and calmin down. Hunted two days this year, first day came up on a cougar kill that was from earlier in the day, woulda been great to see a kitty cat, I've never seen one in the woods in the 20 years I've been hunting. Now, I havn't been hunting deer for 20 years, but I've put a half ass attempt in for deer for about 12 years off and on. This year I had a dream. I dreamed I was gonna shoot a 4x4 with eye guards. Woke up and went to a piece of property the sunday before last, hunted the snowline, didn't see anything, hunted a couple cuts below it nothing. Decided to walk back to the truck to meet my brother. Got to the truck, went to pick up our buddy, didn't see him so we turned around and drove up the road. Then this toad of a deer decided it was just gonna walk out on the road about 50 yards in front of us into the cut... I freaked out. Jumped out of the truck and got to the edge of the cut, the buck didn't even care I was there, just kept walking sniffin out the doe somewhere I'm sure. I pulled up my new howa 300 I bought(amazing gun by the way) and my scope was fogged, couldn't see anything...... I started freeking out, so I used the skyline as my judge, i'd skyline the ridge behind the deer, then drop down to the deerish area I thought the buck was in, finally I got a corner of my scope cleared and pulled the trigger, the buck didn't even kick, shot it straight thru the neck, dead instantly. BUCK DOWN!!!!!!! I guess everyone gets lucky sometimes. Hunted hard all morning, for 5 hours to have one walk right across the road into a flat easy cut.... crazy...

Cool buck. I've dumped a lot of whitetail bucks and muley bucks, but never a blackie. And, I'm almost twice your age. Good going!

only the outside of the scope, it cleared pretty quick after i shot it, who knows, maybe it was all my hot air from me hyperventelating the entire time saying "holly ...." over and over about 3000 times in about 21 seconds. After the hunt, i realized how important anti fog is.... I shoulda known better, i use it on my dive masks, and it works, but crap, I didn't expect to shoot a deer honestly, I've spent hundreds of days in the woods chasin deer and never shot a buck so I figured it would be about the same day
