What would you do
« on: November 04, 2012, 05:43:57 AM »
True  story. Friend pulls up to a gate on Raineer property he had been scouting on opening day, two hrs early and there is a rig there. No big deal, No very often you get one to yourself. He gets out to start loading gear and is approched by one of the guys that asked him if he planned on walking in behind the gate. He says no, im biking(Mountain bike) in behind the gate. Well this "HUNTER" tells him if he goes in there there is going to be trouble, like its his spot or something. He tries to tell him that there is always lots of rigs going in behind most gates but this Ahole wont back down. Well as you can guess this conversation gets pretty heated and he finally just leaves. Im pretty sure I would have told him to F off and went in but hard to say when you are by yourself.  >:(

Maybe it's leased. Maybe there is only one real spot to hunt behind the gate?

No its not leased and no The road goes 4 miles with several spurs. I have been on it many times. Nothing in that area is leased. The guy was just a dick.

I would have asked him where he planned on going. If he was planning on going to the same spot as me I would have gave it to him. He was the first one there and I think that's the right thing to do. If he still wanted to be a dick after I agreed to hunt a different spot but behind the same gate I would have told him to piss off.

In general, if I bump into another on public land, I like to cede the ground without disturbing their hunt.  I bumped into five separate hunters one morning in a national forest and felt like a pinball. (I did end up discovering a bedded cow in one small strip of the thick stuff amidst all these hunters and all the road hunters.)

If it's public land, there is no right to prevent your access, and it is bad form to ask, if there is enough space for more than one group. But what those guys did was threaten and/or harass.  I would have called it in to the sheriff.

I would have got his facial description, a license plate, and a vehicle description.  I would have waited at my truck until he left and then went in behind the gate.  Talk all the crap you want I'm still hunting there!  But the guy sounds like he may do something stupid so I would get all that info so that if he did anything to my rig I could call the sheriff.

Do the same. Cell phone pic of him and the plate on his vehicle. If he threatens you or suggests he is going to vandal your rig come back with a sheriff.

He would have had no problem giving him whatever spot he wanted, There were 2 groups of elk in there and several miles apart. This ground is open to the public and to think you would have it to yourself is foolish.

I'd have hunted it but I have witnessed a few guys that are that way. Real dicks in my opinion. Always makes you wonder if you're going to come back to flat tires or worse. I usually write down their license number ect at that point and a quick phone call to the local law reporting the threat usually settles things fast.

I would have told him that it looks like we would both be hunting here. I would have photoed his rig, and advised him that my friends are not far behind. "Have a great hunt", and walked in...

Or just the wrong person in general.  Sounds like a bully and there is always a bigger and meaner one out there... just a matter of time :bdid:
