tanning question

I always wondered if you could flesh out the hide and then salt it and call it good?  I've seen hides that were just hung out in the sun for a few days and the skin on the inside was leathery but pliable and seemed to hold well with no hair slippage.  Is this just a short term thing?  I'd assume you couldn't get it wet but, that wouldn't be an issue anyway where I'd keep it. 

Can a salted hide or one hung in the sun keep?

Nope....you have to chew it.....salt it for flavor and then just start knawing on it...you'll be fine once you get over the added taste of vomit in your mouth.

Not preserved.   THe salt is used to remove moisture, and prevent (slow) bacterial growth.  It is not tanning.

Sunning it to dry it out won't work either then I'm guessing

NO a salted of sun dried hide would not last very long and would just end up rotting.

You could always save your urine for a for a month or so and than let it set til it turns to ammonia.  Soak the hide in that.  Than as it's drying have your squaw chew on it to soften and break the hide.  Though I have a pretty good idea what she would tell you.
