I'm confused. Are you guy's talking about the deer in velvet looking like mulies are the blacktail looking like mulies? The buck's riverrat posted are 100% blacktail no cross what so ever with mule deer where he lives.

Those other deer in velvet are either northern cali blacktail or mule deer but since I don't know where the pick was taken I'll say mule deer. Clearly you can see a pine tree branch in the picture which helps place them a bit.

This is an interesting subject, so I got to ask. How would you guys feel about killing bucks or bulls in your back yard?

I started the thread simply to show how evil mother nature is when she doesn't show me a buck while archery season is open but when the season closed, they show up in my back yard.....    As for whether I would shoot one... simply put, YES!   I live out in the country on a small piece of land backed by a timber area.

I'm not trying to be a dick, I also live in a wooded area and have wildlife in the yard at times. I just was curious how most would feel shooting one in the back yard. It seems too easy, I know I could be successful every year in the back yard and one of my goals is to get a big blacktail but I want to get one on public land in the backcountry. Hey, if it's legal and you feel good about it, more power to ya. I just was looking for opinoins.

oh no,  I didn't take it that way  :).  I like the question....  I would certainly prefer the adventure of a hunt away from home out in the wilderness.  But if I was posed with tag soup and a buck like those showed up and it was in season, I would not hesitate.

I thought they were mulies, racks are way to wide for blacktail. plus ears are huge and the butts look white. Oh and the pine branch in the pic. If those were blacktails I would crap myself because those would be all washington state record blacktail! just saying.

sorry bowhunter45, i have seen a crap load of blackies in my time as that is my lifes passion, and i cant make those turn into blackies for nothin, they are friggin monsters thats for sure, but maybe they could be northern cali blackies but not washington blackies, as for the question about shootn in the backyard, its would be great for a kid or if you just flat wanted meat, but ya dont feel great about it cause i know, i shot my first bull elk in my backyard during the rifle season a few years back, it was great eatn but it didnt feel like i earned him, but mama got a freezer full of burger and i got a ton of fine steaks, riverrat those are sweet blackies that bottom one is a hog for sure.....and yes mother nature just likes to prove a point once in awhile that she is boss and can do what she wants and us poor saps gotta deal with it or she makes us eat tag soup  :chuckle:
