Wyoming general season deer
« on: November 04, 2012, 10:00:25 AM »
This year started out with high hopes of drawing some limited entry buck tags for a late hunt in NW Wyoming, but our dreams of hunting stinky fat necked muleys in the foothills were put on hold for another year after we saw we were unsuccessful in the draw.

We decided to go ahead and buy some left over licenses and just hunt general season. We crossed our fingers that snow would come early and the deer migration from the high country would come early.

Unfortunately the weather didn't cooperate for us and we were greeted with 8,000 ft snow level and highs in the mid forties in camp. We spent several days in the high country, most of it while getting rained on. With not one buck spotted and only a handful of does we decided we were going to have to change plans and hunt local deer.

The hunting was very slow. I was staying with a buddy who is a taxidermist and not many deer were being brought in.

We were finally able to connect with a couple of bucks, mine was killed on the last night there in some gorgeous but rugged country, a long ways in.

Thanks guy, looking forward to drawing the limited tag next year! There are some giants there if the weather cooperates.

Hey Chad,
Don't despair.  Those bucks will be better eating than "stinky fat necked" ones.  Looks like a cool area.  Which region were you hunting?  I've only hunted G and H.

This was region F. Lots of leftover tags, which is the only reason we were even able to hunt it.

After we came down from the mountains I chased whitetails for about three days, thinking my odds of tagging a respectable whitetail would be better than a muley. I did get one opportunity at a good whitetail but a rooster pheasant kinda ruined our stalk, as well as an unseen doe in the willows and a farmer making some obnoxious clanging noises all at the same time sent him running off never to be seen again.
