Getting ready for the hunt!! (MOOSE TAG HOLDERS)
« on: September 02, 2008, 05:17:52 AM »
Now that the shock of drawing a once in a lifetime MOOSE tag has settled in and most of us are getting down to a good game plan. What are you guy's and gal's doing to get ready for this hunt?

Research overload, I'm a data guy but I've even surprised myself with what I've been able to come up with.  A gameplan is in place now the waiting continues.

+1 I am confident enough that if there are moose in there I will find them. I have been watching videos for days, my biggest obstacle at this point is field judging. I know most of you would drop the first bull available but I have been waiting and dreaming 13 years for this, I'm holding out for a bigger bull.
The things that come to those who wait, may be the things left by those who got there first!

The field judging part will either be easy(if mr. big or mr. small makes an appearance), it will be tougher if you get a 130ish bull that looks pretty good that steps out first thing on that fatefull wednesday morning.  I've looked at enough moose over the last several months I've made up in my mind what I'd like to shoot, now I just have to find him.  I've also talked to enough prior permit holders and guys that spend time in my unit that I have a good feeling for how the hunt will go and the quality of critters in there.  The goal has been set, research done, now its the execution of it. T minus 28 days and counting.  ;)

I have maps, done the phone calls, looked at topos, watched videos now I just need to get my butt over there to see what we are hunting in!!
Richard, thanks for the lead, he is a real nice guy and offered to help on opening week before the deer hunt starts. I am going to meet him when we go over there to scout.

Getting in to good hunting shape has been my #1 goal. I've gone into hunts out of shape before and I won't let it happen on this one. I'm walking about 3 miles a day and riding my bike. Sometimes I ware my meat pack when I walk to work. I'm up to 80lbs now, it's still heavy but do able. Got my game cart rigged to my Mt. bike. I'm towing 160 lbs, I don't think I want to hall more then that with my bike, unless it's all flat on the way out. Gun is ready, maps are ready gear is almost ready. I have my starting area to hunt and have a run and gun game plan also. It's been a fun ride and I'm starting to sleep better now. Also, I'm finding field judging is going to be the hardest part of the hunt. I'm going to check out a 51" moose (head mount) that a guy shot in the 90's. Was the State recore for awhile. This well give me help on my goal for judging a trophy moose. Looking forward to the BAR-B-Qed back straps. :cue:

I have an idea too what I'll do and why so many are killed in the road. :chuckle: We did the scouting, read the maps and just not sure where we'll camp. I've been hiking up and down the desert chasing big mulies in Ore. and elk too. Here in WA. The same but the hot weather kills me! Partner got a little 3x3 blacktail buck but Wifey got a 6'2" cougar that made the mistake of following her up to her stand. :yike: She shot it at 5 yrds. ( Yes honey, wheres my list? ) .We're off to the Ore. Hunt again for a week then IT"S time to go north!!! Wish I knew how to insert a picture of the cougar? STB

We don't have any wall space. 28 mounts in the livingroom alone. stb

That's a nice cat, and with a bow too!!! way cool.
I'm gearing up for the hunt and would like to ask you guy's & gal's who have killed moose in Washington, how much meat (boned out) do you get. I'm looking at how many coolers I'm going to need to bring home my meat.

Might as well fill the back of your truck up with ice and not worry about coolers  :chuckle:
