Blacktail bucks- Videos (More Videos added 12/2)
« on: November 05, 2012, 09:10:58 PM »
This is the only camera I've got out now that isn't over bait. I've got it facing three trees that have been rubbed by bucks in at least the past two years. I was hoping to get a video of the buck that's been doing the rubbing. Well, I didn't get a whole lot of action, just the usual doe with two fawns, a bear, a bobcat, and then two bucks that wandered by a week apart. At first I thought it was the same buck, then I noticed the one has eyeguards, and looks to be a 3x4, and the other I believe is a 3x3 without eyeguards. They both smelled the trees that have been rubbed in the past, but didn't freshen them up. So now I'm wondering, is one of these two the same buck that did the rubbing in the past, or is there another buck out there?

Here's another video, of three (?) deer, not sure what was going on, but they're runnning from something, maybe a coyote (lots of them out there).

I just thought it was funny how the one jumps over the other. The lighting isn't good, looks like the camera used the infrared flash when it wasn't needed, and overexposed it...

That's some great footage!  It's nice those bucks cooperated and gave you some good, full body action.  What kind of camera were you using to get that footage?  It seems quite good IMO.

I just thought it was funny how the one jumps over the other.

My guess is that they were playing.  There's 4 does in the area I hunt that I've seen nearly every time I go out there.  Often they will chase each other around, running, jumping, bucking and playing some form of deer hide-n-seek.  It's quite entertaining.   :chuckle:

Yes, you're right, they could have been playing. Hadn't thought of that.

The camera is a Wildgame Innovations "Micro Red 6." It's a great little camera. Of all my trail cameras it's the only one I really use to take video.

Here's one more video of a doe with two fawns walking by...

OK, rather than starting a new thread, I'm bringing this one back to the top, with some new videos. I checked this camera again after 4 weeks, and got more video of the same bucks, and maybe a new one, or maybe two. Not sure yet, I've got 112 videos to go through. I haven't really hunted this area yet, but now that I've seen the bucks that are in there, I just might give it a shot next year. Here's one for now:

Actually those trees aren't alders. Not sure what they are, they're similar to alders but they're not! Lots of alder and maple in this area, but for some reason the bucks chose these 3 or 4 trees to rub. And of course, notice the dates, all the buck activity I got was the first two weeks of November. After that, the bucks pretty much disappeared and all I get are the does. I think I did get at least one video of a buck on the 15th (first day of late rifle season). So that's good. Might have to plan on being there next year on that day. Only way I can figure to hunt this spot is with a tree stand. So if I decide to try that I've got some learning to do before next season.

In this one, notice the date, the buck is following this doe as if she's in heat (November 9)

So here's the interesting conclussion of all this- had lots of buck activity from about Nov 1 to Nov 12. Then it suddenly drops off to almost nothing. I did get one video of one buck on the 15th, first day of late rifle season, and it was late in the morning, so it's a buck that could have possibly been taken on that day, at that location.

The next chance at a buck would have been four days later, on the last day of the late rifle season. But a guy would have had to be in there at the crack of dawn for a chance at that buck, he was there at 7:15 in the morning. And that's it. Looking at all the videos that were during late archery/muzzleloader season, and there's nothing but does.

So it looks like if I want to hunt this particular spot, I will need a modern firearm tag next year.

Here are the two videos of the only bucks that showed up during daylight hours while late rifle season was open:

Looks like a willow tree. BTs will often hit them year after year.
