« on: December 19, 2012, 08:33:06 AM »
Hey guys. I am looking into whitetail hunting in stevens county. looks like some good hunting and just wanted your opinions on deer numbers, and maybe a little help with what areas would be worth hunting. Also not too sure what to expect or hold out for size wize. would be hunting late rifle. thanks

You have a whole year to do your scouting.  Let your boots be your guide.

yeah, I plan to be there early and do alot of scouting before I hunt. Just was wondering what size bucks are taken in the area, or what a realistic goal would be to set. Also meant to ask if northern idaho up around sandpoint would be comparable to washington, or if one area may be better then the other. thanks

There is deer all over up here, higher numbers closer to cities and ag areas, but some of the biggest bucks are taken up in the mountains..pick a area and scout it

THe wolves have hit Northern Idaho longer and harder.   THey also tend to have harder winters with greater losses annually, so population densities are lower.   Both places have some ungodly big criiters if you are lucky.  Look at some old threads on here and you will get a taste of what the country produces for the average hunter.

Thank you very much I appreciate the info. Very helpfull because I have looked hard at both states and was sort of undecided. sounds like washington may be the ticket with the higher deer numbers.

I think overall, Washington has more private land in alot of the traditional whitetail country.   Idaho has more public but it isn't necessarily what most people think of as whitetail "Habitat".   These are overall generalizations.

Don't limit yourself to Stevens county, ferry and pend Oreille county. All have good whitetail.
If we were supposed to be vegetarian God would have made broccoli more fun to shoot!
"HOYT" why would you even consider shooting something else?

Thanks for the info, I will have to check out those areas as well. Also taking into consideration is that idaho is killing wolves now, by helicopter as well. I would think that that will help the deer herd significantly. I think I remember someone saying that there aren't near the wolves in washington. I would think that it would just be a matter of time.

That time is now.  They are already there in Stevens Co.
