Early season success
« on: November 09, 2012, 10:24:26 AM »
3 rats and a little beaver . The beaver was a bit of a surprise because this ditch was in the middle of a hay field. Not a tree in sight. The ditch was about 10'wide, but something had built a little dam out of mud and grass. I set 3 muskrat sized colony traps and 2 beaver sized swim-throughs.  Good start to the season!

Two more rats today. I know it's not a big deal to most of you, but I still get excited.

I just used colony cage traps set in the runs and in the mouth of a culvert.  Apple slices in the one set in the culvert. This is the first time I've had any success with them.

Nice job, hope to be able to join you all in littlerock on the 1st (I'll give you a heads up a week before, hope thats enough time, I can always bring pizza and share with the class, if that helps) My 1st trapping was on the black river and its tributaries, I bet its clogged with nutria by now, they were there back in the 70s, back then they were worth skinning and the dumbest critter I ever met, well, possums might beat em by a nose....

My biggest problem is time off work, and there is no regular schedule, I work for an auction co. I never know from one day to the next, dont get me wrong I love my job, but, I would eagerly take a month layoff (unemployment check of course) to go lay some cages, I know its all we got, still, it would be fun, at any rate, I'll let you know about dec 1....Go knock em dead....
