I think the main reason is that there are two kinds of swans, one is endangered or threatened, the other is not.  We mostly have the not threatened ones but some of the others may be mixed in.

The state could initiate a quota like on the Duskys, check your swan in and when the quota of protected ones is reached, shut the season down.  Unfortunately htis would cost some $$ and probably makes too much sense for the state to implement.   :bash:

I vote special drawing permits. One a year. And offer additional entries for the poacher reporters. :0)

Anti hunting idiots and other non-hunters refer to any birdshot BB as buckshot, I've never seen or heard of anyone shooting actual buckshot, though that T shot can sure whistle it's way into the sky....

I was told by a clerk at Wholesale Sport's (Sportman's at the time) that he uses 00 buckshot for snows and Canadians, and he handed me the box. They were Hevi-shot dead coyote  :o

Not true. I have been told numerous times that we cannot get a swan season due to a die off of swans every year in BC. Currently Swans are over the management goal for the pacific flyway, meaning the Feds would allow a season. However due to lead poisoning  and the peoples republic of Seattle we will probably never get a season. You can currently hunt them by permit in Utah, Montana, South Carolina and I think at least one of the dakotas?

Saturday morning myself and 2 others were hunting the pond on HWY 12 in Porter, We had a tundra swan land in our decoys and start feeding. It was there for about 20 minutes then some ducks came in so we shot them. The swan flew off to the other side of the pond at about 50 yards up. A guy on that side shot 3 times at it!!! He missed.  All 3 of us started screaming at the guy!

I'm sure anybody who has hunted the Pot holes can relate to waiting over deeks and watching a flock of ducks or geese coming arose the Desert a mile or so out and maybe 1/2 mile up and then Flare strait up as a some D-bags pop off some OO buckshot from out on some hill!!   Maddening really

I was thinking that it is quite possible that somebody shot at this Swan or a pair of mates in their own back yard/pond. Like they took their home defense shotgun from the closet with 00 Buckshot and just started shooting. Who knows, I have never encountered anyone hunting ducks with Buckshot but I am sure it does happen.
