My boys first buck!
«
on:
November 10, 2012, 11:18:52 PM »
After finishing up with his Hunters Ed course last Saturday my boy was ready to go hunting this morning. Last night when I sent him to bed I told him I would wake him up at 5am. I woke up a little early and could already hear him stiring around downstairs. He finally came up at 5 to see if I was awake and told me that he'd been up since 3:30 and he couldn't go back to sleep.
My wife rolls over and says he is gonna be worse than me,
I just chuckle and tell her it must be in the blood.
We get going and arrive at our area right at daylight and hike in. Every few hundred yards or so we would stop and rattle. Plenty of deer sign and lots of fresh tracks in the snow but we didn't see a single animal.
I had some things that I needed to take care of today so after a couple hours I informed him that we needed to get headed home. I could tell he was pretty bummed out, first day of hunting and we didn't even see a deer. On the way home I told him we had time to stop by one more place close to the house and glass a spot that we usually see deer in. We pulled in and were heading down to find a place to park when he yells, Dad Stop! He spotted a little buck about 80yds off the road that had just stood up out of his bed.
I shut the truck off and he jumps out and loads his gun. The whole time this little buck just stands there and stares at us. I tell him we need to make sure it has 4 points before you shoot. After a few minutes the buck finally turns his head and I can see that it is a legal buck. I tell him to go ahead and shoot whenever he is ready. I sware I barely got the words out of my mouth and BANG! The buck jumps and takes off. I could tell it was a solid hit and give him a high five. From where we were at we couldn't see the buck go down but I knew he hadn't gone far. We walk over and find him laying dead about 20yds away. Perfect shot and one happy kid!
A nice little 4x4!

Very nice buck.
My favorite part of the story is that he couldn't sleep because of the anticipation.
